You tap the blue heart to Like someone, and she is told in her Likes section or you appear on her Discover page. When she Likes you back, a pop-up lets the two of you message each other and start a conversation. That returned Like is the match.
How a match gets made
A match takes two taps, one from each side. You Like her, she Likes you, and the pop-up opens the conversation.
Match says all free members can chat with every match, so the conversation does not depend on a paid plan. It also says messages cannot be unsent once they are sent, so read your first line before you press the button.
Why she may not see you the way you see her
Match says members do not automatically receive you as a match when you receive them. Matching is member-specific. A woman can appear in your matches and you may not appear in hers.
There is one feature built to narrow this gap. Mutual Match considers both people's criteria. Mutual Search does something similar, finding people who fit what you want while you fit what they want, based on both pages.
For a man this explains a lot of confusion. A woman who looks like a perfect fit to you may have filters that never show her your page. That is a filter rather than a verdict on you, and no amount of rewording changes it.
Where the women in your feed come from
Recommended profiles are members in your area, chosen from your preferences and your activity. Top Picks work in a similar way, but they are matched to more of your preferences, with slightly widened age, height and distance filters.
Both depend on what you tell Match you want and on how you use the site. Fill in your preferences honestly. If you set them so narrowly that Match has almost no one to show you, you will see the same few women over and over.
Unmatching
You can unmatch from the app by swiping left on a message, or on desktop through the three dots and then Unmatch. Unmatching deletes your messages with that person.
Do it when a conversation has plainly ended or when someone is being rude. Do not do it out of annoyance after one slow reply, because the messages go with it and the door closes.
What to do after the match
A match is a small event. It shows that a woman looked at your page and was willing to talk, and nothing more. The work is turning that into a plan.
My point about messages is that women ignore far more men than they answer, so your first line has to be worth opening. Use one real detail from her page, say something a little playful about it, and end with a question she can answer in one line. Skip "hey" and skip a paragraph about yourself.
Keep the exchange short. My range is about four to seven texts before you suggest a time and place. A match that is still chatting after two weeks with no plan is a pen pal, and pen pals do not become dates.
Mistakes men make with matches
The first is counting. A long list of matches feels like winning, but twenty silent matches are worth less than one woman who agreed to meet on Thursday.
The second is sending the same opener to everyone. Women can tell, and the reply rate shows it.
The third is waiting for her to lead. Free members can chat with every match, so you lose nothing by writing first, and the man who writes within a day is usually ahead of the one who thinks about it for a week.
Keeping the pool full
Because a match needs a Like from both sides, the size of your pool matters. If you only Like a handful of women a week, you will get a handful of matches at most, and a bad week will look like a bad site.
Look through Recommended and Top Picks regularly, and use Search when you have a type in mind. Like the women you would honestly want to meet, and spend the rest of your effort on writing to the ones who Like you back.
When matches are not coming
If Likes go unreturned, the cause is almost always what she sees when she opens your page: the lead photo, the rest of the set, and whether the words sound like a person. Fix those before you spend on a paid tier. A subscription multiplies a strong page and does nothing for a weak one.
