You get a match on Match.com the moment a woman Likes you back, so more matches come from two things: reaching more of the right women, and being worth a Like once she looks. Fix the photos first, then your filters, then how you spend your Likes and your first message. The free version shows you quickly which of those is the weak one.

When a match actually happens

You tap the blue heart to Like a woman. If she returns the Like, that is a match, and the two of you can message each other. Free members can chat with every match.

So a match is her answer to you. That puts the work where it belongs: on what she sees when she opens your page, and on whether she sees it at all.

Fix the photos

Match requires at least one clear photo of your face and three photos in total before your page is shown. Treat the minimum as the floor.

Lead with a clear daylight shot of your face, alone in the frame. Then add photos of you doing things, on different days and in different clothes. Five photos in the same gray shirt look like one afternoon. A set that shows a real week is more believable and gives her more to like.

a dating coach's order on every site is photos first, because they decide whether she stops. Nothing you write helps if the first photo is dark, small or a group shot where she cannot find you.

Widen your preferences

Setting your preferences too narrowly is a quiet cause of "the site is empty." If you ask for a tiny slice of women, Match has little to show you, and you will blame the site.

Loosen age, distance and the optional filters a step at a time. Stop where you would really go on a date. A wider radius brings women who live too far for a weeknight drink, and those matches take time without giving you dates.

Use every way of looking

Match gives you several ways to find women. Discover shows Recommended members and Top Picks. Search lets you filter by what you want. Mutual Search finds people who fit your criteria while you fit theirs. Reverse Search finds women whose stated preferences you meet.

Using more than one puts your page in front of more of the right women. Reverse Search in particular finds women who have said they want a man like you, so a Like from there tends to be an easier yes.

Like fewer women, on purpose

Liking everyone is the usual way men lower their own results. My warning on every app is that liking nearly everyone tends to make the app treat you as less attractive and show you to fewer of the women you want.

Like the women you would be glad to hear from. It feels slower and it usually gets better matches.

Write the first message properly

A paying member can write to a woman directly, without waiting for a mutual Like. That is a second route to a match, and a message is only worth sending if it is worth opening.

Use one real detail from her page, say something a little playful about it, and end on a question she can answer in a line. Send one message, not three. A "hi" is one of dozens she will get that day.

coach usually moves a woman from the app to her number in four to seven messages, with every message heading toward a plan.

Use a Boost only when the rest is right

Match sells one-time features such as Boost, which puts you near the top of search results for a short window. What each costs, and what each tier includes, changes, so read the screen on the day you decide.

My rule for any paid feature is that it multiplies what you already have. A Boost shows a good page to more women and a weak page to more women, which is no help. Fix the photos before you pay to show them to more people.

What to check each week

Do not judge it after a day. coach compares online dating to building an asset: the returns come slowly, and the men who fail mostly quit too early.

Each week, count the women you Liked, how many Liked you back, how many conversations started and how many dates you set. Then read the numbers by stage.

  • Few Likes back: the photos are the problem.
  • Likes back but no conversations: the first message is the problem.
  • Conversations but no dates: you wait too long to suggest a drink.

Change one thing at a time. If a change helps, keep it. If it does not, put it back and try the next.

If the pool is small

Match is not the biggest app now, and a small city can run out of new women fast. coach says he does not treat Match as a main site for that reason. If you search and see the same twenty names for three weeks, run a second app beside it with your best photos on both. The aim is dates, and it does not matter which one produces them.
