Yes, you can. A free Match member can chat with all of his matches, rate a limited number of people each day in his Recommended stack, and browse curated members. Once the two of you match, you can message each other directly. Some free actions, like sending Likes, require a photo on your account first.

What a free account gets you

The free version of Match covers three things:

  • Chatting with every match you have
  • Rating a daily allowance of people in your Recommended stack
  • Exploring curated member profiles

That is a real way to use the app, not a trial that shows you a locked screen. You can find people, show interest, and talk to the ones who are interested back, all without paying.

The limit to notice is the daily one. Your Recommended stack gives you a set number of ratings each day, so you cannot rate without limit in one sitting. That is less of a problem than it sounds, as the rest of this article explains.

Matching is how free members talk

The key rule for a free member is this: once you match with someone, the two of you can message each other directly.

So on the free version, matching is the whole game. Every rating you give in your Recommended stack is a chance at a match, and every match is a conversation you can have without paying anything.

That makes each daily rating worth a little thought. Spend them on women you would actually want to meet, not on everyone who scrolls past. a dating coach has warned that on most apps, rating everyone favorably backfires. The software reads it as a lack of standards and starts steering you toward women you would never have chosen.

Put a photo up first

Match asks for a photo on your profile before some free actions, including sending Likes. Without one, you are shut out of part of the free version before you start.

Choose that photo with some care, because on the free version it does most of the work. It is what a woman sees when she decides whether to Like you back. Lead with a recent shot that shows your face plainly, taken in daylight, just you. Save the group shots and the sunglasses for further down.

Once the photo is up, fill in the rest. An empty page leaves her guessing, and guessing is not a reason to match with a stranger.

Where free runs out

Free covers talking to your matches. What it does not cover is the set of tools in the paid tiers.

Silver adds seeing who Likes you. Platinum adds things like Unlimited Search, advanced filters and read receipts. Diamond adds dating-intent filters and automatic Boosts. None of those is available on the free version.

The one worth knowing about most is search. In My view, the thing Match does better than the swipe apps is letting you go and find women on your own terms, where the swipe apps leave the choice of who you see to their software. On the free version, a lot of what you see is the Recommended stack and the curated members the app picks for you.

Get results for free before you pay

My rule for any paid feature on a dating app is simple. It multiplies what you are already getting. If you get some matches and some conversations for free, paying can get you more of them. If you get nothing for free, paying mostly shows that same nothing to more people.

So use the free version as a test. Put up a good photo, fill in your page, spend your daily ratings well, and write to your matches. Give it a couple of weeks. If matches are coming in and some of them are turning into conversations, you have something worth multiplying, and one month of a paid tier is a fair experiment.

If nothing is coming in, the fix is your photos and your page, not your membership.

Is it worth paying?

My view is that paying for a dating app is usually worth testing, as long as you test it properly. Pay for one month, compare it against your free weeks, and keep paying only if the difference is obvious.

On Match in particular, the feature that most changes what you can do is the ability to reach women yourself rather than waiting for them to come to you. If your free weeks show that women like you once they see you, paying for more ways to be seen, and to find them, is where the money earns its keep.

Making the free version count

A free account on Match works best when you treat it like a short daily habit.

Open the app, go through your Recommended stack while you have ratings left, and answer your matches the same day they arrive. A reply that comes the same day keeps the interest that made her match with you. After three days of silence, you are starting again with someone who has moved on to other conversations.

Keep your first messages short and about her. Find one detail she chose to share, say something about it, and leave her an easy way to answer. A free member who does that every day is likely to get more out of Match than a paying member who does not.
