A Like on a dating app disappears because the member who sent it is no longer visible to you. Match says she either hid her page, took a break because she is seeing someone, or was removed for breaking the site's rules. It can also mean she decided you were not her type and blocked you. Match does not send fake Likes or messages, so a vanished one was real when it arrived.

What you see when it happens

The usual version goes like this. An email tells you someone Liked you. You sign in, go looking for her, and she is not there.

It feels like the site waved a woman in front of you and then pulled her back. Match says that is not what happened. It states that it does not send fake or misleading emails, messages or Likes, and it names the ordinary reasons instead. The Like came from a real member, and that member left your view before you got to it.

The three ways a member leaves

Match lists three reasons a member can turn up as Profile Unavailable.

She chose to take a break to pursue a relationship. A woman who starts seeing someone has little reason to keep her page up.

She chose to hide her page. A hidden page stays out of search results and out of sight of new members. Earlier conversations stay open, but her page shows as unavailable inside them.

She was removed suddenly for a security violation. Match says a removed member can sometimes send a few Likes or messages before the team catches the account. It also says the team has gotten better at catching these quickly. If a Like came in and then disappeared fast, this is one honest explanation.

When it was about you

There is a fourth reason, and it is the one men worry about. Match says that when someone decides you are not her type, she can remove your page from her searches or block you. Blocking takes away her page from your view, along with any communication you had with her.

You cannot tell which of the four reasons applies, and nothing in the app will tell you. So do not spend an evening trying to work it out. A woman who paused or hid her page may come back. A woman who blocked you will not. Neither answer changes what you should do next.

Why you cannot take a Like back

Some men reverse the question. They want to remove a Like they sent, because they tapped the wrong woman or changed their mind.

Match has no option to unlike or remove a Like. What it lists instead is to unmatch the member or to block her. Both of those end the connection rather than undoing one tap, so use them only when you actually want her out of your account.

That is a reason to slow down before you tap. A Like is cheap to send and cannot be pulled back, so give each woman's photos and written answers a real look first.

Do not go looking for her

When a woman who wrote to you vanishes, the useful response is none. Do not search for her on other apps, and do not try to reach her through some other route. If she hid her page, she hid it from you too.

A man who chases a missing Like has already lost a day. The open conversations in your account are the ones that can still turn into a date, and those are where your attention belongs.

How to answer the Likes and matches that stay

Treat every Like as a short window. She may pause her account next week, so answer the day it arrives.

Write one or two sentences about one specific thing on her page, such as a place she mentions or a photo that shows what she does on a weekend. Then ask something she can answer in a line. A man who answers fast with something real stands out against the ones who send a greeting or wait three days.

If the Like was real and she is still there, you are one reply away from a conversation. Go to the next one without waiting to see whether the first will vanish.

The simple rule

Likes disappear because members come and go, and a few of them chose to remove you. You cannot control any of that, and you cannot unlike on Match. What you can control is how fast you answer the ones who stay.
