Match says a profile can show as Profile Unavailable because the member chose to take a break, hid her profile, or was removed for a security violation. She may also have unmatched or blocked you. Match does not tell you which one applies, so you cannot know from the screen, and the right response is the same in every case.
The reasons Match gives
There are a few separate things going on, and they look identical from your side.
She took a break. Members sometimes step away to date someone or to rest, and their page goes quiet.
She hid her page. A hidden profile does not show in search, and earlier conversations show her as Profile Unavailable.
She was removed. Match says members are sometimes removed suddenly for security violations.
She decided you were not her type. Match says a member can remove you from her searches or block you, which removes her profile visibility and any communications.
What happens when someone unmatches
Unmatching deletes the messages between the two of you. Match says you may not be able to match with the same profile again.
Match also says there is no option to unlike or remove a Like. If someone wants out, she can unmatch or block, and either of those ends the connection from her side. That is why a conversation can vanish with no warning and no message from her.
When a Like disappears too
Sometimes you get an email that someone Liked you, and when you sign in the Like is gone. Match says this means the member removed her profile or Match took it down. It does not mean Match invented the Like.
That sounds suspicious to a man, but there is nothing to do about it except move on. A Like from a woman who is already gone cannot become a conversation.
What does not tell you anything
Do not read a disappearance as a verdict on you in particular. Women leave sites for reasons that have nothing to do with the man they were writing to, and Match gives you no way to see which reason applies.
You can still look at your own side of the exchange. If the woman vanished right after you asked for her number in the first few lines, or after you sent three messages in a row with no reply, your pace may be part of it. If she vanished after a good exchange, a break or a removal is at least as likely. You cannot sort these out from the screen, and trying will cost you an evening.
It helps to keep a short note of where your conversations end. After a few weeks you will see whether women drop away at the same point, such as right after you ask for a number, and that is something you can change.
The Diamond feature for unanswered matches
Match has a feature on its Diamond tier called Anti-Ghosting. It makes you answer your current matches before you can like more people, once a large pile of matches has gone unmessaged.
It is aimed at the opposite problem: men who collect matches and never write. If you are on Diamond and the app keeps nudging you to answer, that is a sign you have been collecting.
Move on to the next woman
Do not try to find her again, and do not email Match to ask why. You will not get an answer, and you will lose time you could spend on women who are still there.
Write to the next woman. A match that disappears is a reason to have more than one conversation going, not a reason to take it personally. My point about messages is that women ignore far more men than they answer, so a steady flow of good first lines does more for you than grief over one lost conversation.
How to lose fewer conversations
Move quickly. A match that is still chatting after two weeks with no plan has a lot of time to disappear. My range is about four to seven texts before you suggest a time and place, and a conversation with a plan attached is much harder to lose than one that only drifts.
Keep your first lines specific and short. Then, once she agrees to meet, confirm the plan, the day and the place. A woman with a date on her calendar is a woman who stays.
