Match removes messages on its own after 180 days. It shows only a limited number of messages in a long conversation. It deletes the whole conversation if you unmatch, which one swipe on the app can do by accident. If she hid her page or blocked you, the chat can vanish too. Work through those in order and you will usually find the reason.

Messages expire on their own

Match keeps messages for 180 days. After that they are removed from the site automatically, even if you never deleted a single one.

So a conversation that went quiet months ago can be empty when you come back to it. Nothing broke. The messages aged out.

A long chat shows only part of itself

Each conversation also has a cap on how many messages it displays, counting both the ones you sent and the ones you received. Once a long back and forth passes the cap, the oldest messages stop appearing, well before the 180 days are up.

If you remember something she said weeks ago and cannot find it, this is the likely reason. The words may be hidden rather than gone, but you cannot get them back by scrolling.

One swipe can unmatch her

On the Match app, swiping left on a message unmatches you from that member and deletes your messages with her. On a computer, the three dots inside the conversation offer Unmatch, which does the same thing.

It is an easy way to lose a conversation you wanted. You swipe to clear a notification, or your thumb catches the edge of the screen while you scroll, and a conversation you wanted is gone. Deleting is permanent, and Match says it cannot retrieve deleted messages or ones older than 180 days.

She hid her page

If a woman hides her page, you can still read the earlier messages, but her page shows as Profile Unavailable in the conversation. The chat does not disappear. She does.

Match also gives two other reasons a member can show as unavailable. She may have taken a break to pursue a relationship. Or she may have been removed for a security violation. You cannot tell which from the screen.

She blocked you

Match says that when someone blocks you, her page visibility is removed along with any communications you had with her. This is the one that stings, because the conversation is gone and nothing tells you why.

You will not get a notice. If a chat vanishes without a swipe, without 180 days passing and without an unavailable label, a block is a fair guess. It is only a guess, and the right response is the same either way: leave it.

How to tell which one it was

Run through four questions.

Was the conversation old, past about six months? Then it expired. Was it a very long chat, with only the oldest part missing? Then it hit the display cap. Did you swipe on the app lately? Then you may have unmatched her yourself. Does her page show as unavailable inside the chat? Then she hid it, took a break or was removed. If it is simply gone, she may have blocked you.

Do not write to her to ask. A message saying "did you block me?" is the least attractive way to find out, and it only works if the answer was no.

If she is still in your matches

Sometimes the old messages are gone but she is still in your list of matches. Then nothing is lost that cannot be rebuilt.

Write a short, light message about something real, such as a plan, a place or something from her page. Do not apologize for the empty chat or ask what happened. A conversation that restarts with a question she can answer in a line usually picks up, and a long explanation does not.

Keep what matters yourself

Match suggests saving older messages before they are removed, by copying the text or taking screenshots. Do that for one reason only: a phone number, an address, a plan, the name of a place she mentioned.

The better habit is to move the conversation off the app early. a dating coach says plans made only by text with someone you have never met are much more likely to fall through than plans made on a phone or video call. When a chat is going well, get her number, set up a call, and aim the conversation at a plan. A woman who has your number, and a date on the calendar, does not depend on an app deciding what to keep. The app holds your messages for a limited time. The date is what you were after.
