A profile disappears on Match.com for one of a few reasons, and Match does not tell you which. The woman may have hidden her profile, taken a break to date someone, or been removed for a security violation. Or she may have taken you out of her own search, or blocked you. From your screen they all look the same, and the right response is the same too: stop looking for her and spend the time on women who are still there.

The reasons Match gives

Match says a profile can show as unavailable for three reasons. The member took a break to be with someone. She chose to hide her profile. Or she was removed suddenly for a security violation.

The first one is good news in a way. A woman who left to date someone is a woman who got what she came for. The second is a choice she can undo. The third is Match's decision, and it has nothing to do with you.

Hidden profiles

When a member hides her profile, it stops appearing in search results, and new members cannot view it. Earlier conversations stay open. Inside them, her profile reads Profile Unavailable.

Match says hiding lowers a member's chances of meeting someone, so a woman who hides her profile is usually pausing on purpose. She may be talking to someone, or she may be tired of the site. Nothing about it means she lost interest in you in particular.

Removed from her results

This is the case that surprises men. Match says that if a woman decides you are not her type, she can remove your profile from her searches or block you. A block removes her profile visibility and any communication you had with her.

Match also lets higher paid tiers do this more precisely. Subscribers on the Platinum and Diamond tiers can remove a member from their search results and lists using the X on his profile, or the Hide from search option. The member who gets removed is not told.

So a profile you saw yesterday can be missing today because one woman's settings changed, and nothing on your side tells you so. Blocking works in a similar way: it keeps the blocked member out of her search results and her Discovery page, and Match lets a member block a very large number of people.

Profiles removed for a violation

Match says a member removed for a violation may send a few Likes or messages before the site catches her. Her profile then shows as unavailable. Match also says its team has gotten better at catching these cases quickly.

If a Like or a note from a woman is followed by an unavailable page, this may be the reason. It is not about you, and there is nothing to do with that information.

What to do about a missing profile

Do nothing about her. Do not write to ask where she went, and do not go looking for her through other apps. A woman who hid her profile or took a break is gone for now, and a woman who removed or blocked you will not welcome a note.

Put the attention into the women who are still there. a dating coach says to expect most women to say no more often than yes at every stage, so the way to deal with a lost one is to have plenty of others in motion. If the whole thing starts to feel personal, count your numbers instead: how many women you wrote to, how many wrote back, how many turned into a phone call. One missing profile is one entry in a long list.

Make your own profile and bio harder to remove

You cannot see who has taken you off her results, but you can control how many women would want to. a dating coach says most men's profiles are boring and blend in, and that a profile which stands out in an attractive way beats one that is merely acceptable. He says it is better to have some women love your profile than for many to tolerate it.

Two practical points follow. First, drop any photo that is clearly weaker than the rest, because a woman judges you on your worst one. Second, say something specific and true about what you do and want, so a woman who reads it knows quickly whether you are her type. A woman who sees a vague profile has a reason to remove it, and a woman who sees a clear one has a reason to write back.
