Match says a page shows unavailable when the member has taken a break to date someone, and the matches and messages with her stop. It can also mean she hid her page, she was removed from the site, or she blocked you. Match does not say which reason applies to a given page, so you cannot tell from the screen, and the right response is the same in every case.

The four reasons

There are four explanations, and Match's own help pages give each.

She took a break to pursue a relationship. This is the one the label is named for, and for a man it is the most reasonable one to hope for. Someone she met seems promising, so she stepped back.

She hid her page. Hidden pages stay out of search and cannot be viewed, though earlier conversations still work.

She was removed. Match says members are sometimes removed suddenly for security violations, and they may send a few likes or messages before it is caught.

She blocked you, or removed you from her searches. In that case her page and your communications disappear for you.

Why you cannot tell which one

Match does not say which reason applies. The screen reads the same for all four.

Do not let that become a puzzle. Men lose evenings trying to work out whether a woman is dating someone, hiding, banned or avoiding them, and the answer is invisible whichever way you look. Checking again tomorrow will not reveal it.

What a removed member means for you

The removal case is worth a moment, because it can touch real conversations.

If a woman was removed for a security violation, the likes or messages she sent before being caught may have been from an account that was not what it seemed. That is one reason a warm opening from a stranger who knows nothing about you deserves some caution.

If you were in a long exchange with someone who then went unavailable, do not take it personally and do not chase her elsewhere. If she asked for money, photos or a move to another app before disappearing, treat it as a close call and report it.

What a block looks like

Being blocked is the reason men fear most, and it is the least common one for a woman you have only exchanged a few lines with.

If she was friendly and then her page went unavailable, a break or a hidden page is more likely than a block, because most blocks follow something that felt wrong to her. Look back at your last few messages with an honest eye. If they were pushy, long or insistent, assume that is the lesson and change it.

Your next step

Move on, without drama. There is nothing to repair and nowhere to send a message that would reach her.

Spend the time you would have spent wondering on women who are available. Check your recent likes and conversations, answer the ones that are waiting, and send a few new messages that mention one real detail from each page.

Avoid waiting on one woman

The deeper lesson is about pace. A conversation with one woman that runs for weeks leaves you exposed to exactly this: she takes a break, hides, or leaves, and the conversation ends without a date.

Once there is some warmth, suggest a specific, easy plan. A coffee near her or a walk is enough. A woman who says yes gives you a date. A woman who says no gives you an answer. A woman who goes unavailable before you ask has taught you to ask sooner.

When conversations end early

If many conversations end before they reach a plan, the cause is usually in how long you wait to suggest meeting, or in the first message that starts them. A coach who reads your photos and your messages together can tell you which, and it is rarely hard to fix.
