Messages usually vanish from a Plenty of Fish inbox for one of three reasons. Her account is no longer active, POF removed a message it judged unpleasant or unwanted, or the chat was more than 30 days old and got cleared to keep your inbox tidy. Each one means something different, so start by working out which one you are looking at.

Three ways a conversation goes missing

On your screen the three look almost the same. A name is gone from your list, or a message you remember is no longer where it was. The clue is whatever else went missing at the same time.

  • If her page is gone as well, along with your past messages, her account is most likely no longer active.
  • If one message has dropped out of a conversation that is otherwise still there, POF may have removed that one message.
  • If the conversation was old and had gone quiet, it was probably cleared after 30 days.

When her account is no longer active

POF's explanation for a missing page and missing messages is short. The account is most likely not active any more.

That covers plenty of ordinary reasons. She may have deleted the app after a bad week. She may have started seeing someone. She may have stepped away for a while and not come back yet. Almost none of that is about you, and a conversation that ends this way says very little about how you were doing.

Leave it alone. Searching for her on Instagram to ask what happened comes across as alarming, however friendly you mean it. If the two of you had already swapped numbers, one easy text is fine. If she does not answer that, let it go.

When POF removes a message

POF also takes out messages it thinks could be unpleasant or unwanted. That works in both directions.

If something she sent you vanished, POF may have decided it was something you were better off not reading. Fair enough.

If something you sent vanished, read it back as she would have. Was it sexual before she had shown any interest in that? Was it a follow-up grumbling that she had not answered? Was it a long block of text, or an opener you paste to every woman? From a stranger, any of those can land as unwanted.

Short and light works better on the apps anyway. Compare two openers. "Hey gorgeous, you look like trouble, what are you up to tonight" gives her nothing to answer and reads like a line sent to fifty women. "Is that the steep trail by the reservoir in your third photo? I gave up halfway" is about her, takes her five seconds to answer, and sounds like a man worth talking to. Nobody removes a message like the second one.

The 30-day clear-out

Conversations older than 30 days get cleared from your inbox. So a chat you were saving for later may simply not be there when you go back for it.

Read that as a deadline, and a generous one. Her interest is highest in the first day or two after you match, and it cools every day that nobody suggests anything. Most conversations that sit untouched for weeks were finished long before POF tidied them away.

The point of writing to her was never to keep a chat going forever. It is to move it along: from the app to her number, from texting to a quick call if that suits you both, and from there to a plan with a day and a place in it.

Getting open matches to a date inside a month

Open your inbox and rank the conversations by how close each one is to a plan.

Deal with the nearest ones first. If you have talked about getting a drink, name a day. If she has already said yes to a day, ask for her number so the plan sits in your phone rather than in an inbox that clears itself. Once the plan is in your texts, nothing POF tidies away can touch it.

Then work down the rest. A woman who answers warmly but slowly is worth one clear suggestion. A woman who has been silent for a week is worth one short, friendly line, and after that she is worth leaving alone.

Run several conversations at the same time rather than betting everything on one. It is easier to write naturally when losing any single chat would not ruin your week, and women pick up on that ease.

When messages vanish a lot

One missing conversation means almost nothing. If it happens often, the kind of loss tells you what to change.

  • Women's accounts disappearing is normal turnover on the dating apps, and there is nothing to fix.
  • Your own messages vanishing more than once points at what you are writing. Make your openers shorter and friendlier.
  • Chats reaching 30 days and getting cleared points at your pace. Suggest meeting sooner.
