The app our material names for China is Tantan, a dating app with matches and messages like the others. Tinder says it is available in most countries, and Feeld has removed its app from China. Our material does not rank the apps Chinese women use, and a list we made up would be worse than none, so use the method below to find what works in your own city.
Tantan and its two versions
Tantan has a Chinese version and a separate international version. The international one is run from Singapore by Hello Planet Pte. Ltd. and has its own terms and community rules.
That split matters for one practical reason. Use the version your app store offers for your region. Do not hunt for a different version or fake your location to get one, because that breaks the app's rules and can get your account removed.
What Tantan says about itself is useful context. It describes matching on shared passions, with Tribe rooms and in-person events, rather than endless swiping. It says it runs a verification process so that you meet real people. Its guidelines ban fake accounts, stock pictures, scams and requests for money, and they ban lying about your age, your relationship status or your intentions. Read that list as a promise about the room you are entering, and as a rule for yourself.
What the other lists say
Tinder says it is available in most countries and names only Russia and Belarus as exceptions. That is the company's claim, so open the app where you are and check whether it works for you.
Feeld lists China among the countries where it has removed the app.
Facebook Dating keeps a list of countries on its help page, and the list we have read names the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam in Asia. China is not among them, though lists change, so check the page yourself.
For every other app, use the company's own page and the store for your region. A forum post from a few years back will not tell you what works today.
How to find what works in your city
Our material does not publish how many women near you use any given app, and neither does any app. You find that out by looking.
Ask people who live there. A coworker, a friend, or a woman you already know can tell you which apps her friends actually open. Their answer is more useful than any list.
Then install two apps and look. Note how many women appear near you, how recently they were active, and whether the same faces keep returning. A thin local pool is the one problem a paid plan will not fix.
Say whether you live there or are visiting
A clear sentence about your situation saves a lot of time. If you live in China, say so. If you are visiting, say that and say until when. A woman who learns after three messages that you leave on Sunday may feel misled, and the evening is gone. Saying it early filters for women who are fine with it.
Keep the language simple
If English is not her first language, short sentences win. Avoid slang and jokes that hinge on a pun, and ask one clear question about something she wrote instead of sending a clever paragraph she must translate. If you can write a line in her language, even an imperfect one, it shows effort.
Pick a detail from her page, such as the trip she described, the dish she is cooking or her work, and ask about it. She will answer a man who read what she wrote.
Check who you are talking to
Fake and misleading accounts exist on every app in every country. A short video call before you travel across a city to meet someone is the cheapest defense. A woman who always has a reason not to be on video has told you something.
Treat any request for money as the end of the conversation, whatever the reason given. A verified account is a better sign than an unverified one, but it proves only that the face is attached to a real account. It does not tell you what she wants.
Suggest a public place that is easy to reach and easy to leave. A café or a lunch is plenty. Arrive early, put your phone away and let her set the pace.
Test two for two weeks
Choose two apps and give each the same attention for two weeks. Write down how many women you liked, how many liked you back, how many replied and how many agreed to meet.
Be selective. a dating coach says an app reads a man who likes everybody as less attractive, and it shows him fewer of the women he would want. Like the women you would truly write to.
After two weeks, keep the app that produced more plans for the same effort. That result is worth more than any list of apps.
