Tantan is a real dating app, and the version meant for men outside China is run by the Singapore company Hello Planet Pte. Ltd. It says it verifies users on the back end, requires members to be at least 18, and bans scams and money requests in its community rules. That makes it legitimate. Whether it is safe depends on how you use it, and whether it is worth using depends on how many women near you are on it.
Two versions, one name
The Chinese version and the international version are different products. The international one has its own company, its own terms and its own community rules.
If you are outside China, use the version your app store offers in your region. Faking a location or hunting for another version to get around a setting breaks the app's rules and can get your account removed.
What the company says it does
Tantan says it runs a verification process on the back end so that users meet real, verified people. To sign up you must be at least 18, and you register with a Tantan ID tied to a mobile number or an email address.
Its community guidelines ban fake accounts, stock photos, scams and money requests. They also ban misleading others about age, relationship status or intentions. Read the list as a promise about the room you are entering, and as a set of rules that apply to you. Use your own photos, say honestly what you want, and do not send money to anyone you have not met.
What the company cannot do
A verification process and a list of rules do not stop every bad actor. They make it easier to report and remove one. No app can promise that a stranger is who she says.
Treat a verified account as a better sign than an unverified one, not as proof. The risks are the ones on every dating app: fake accounts, requests for money, and what you share in a chat.
Warning signs and what to do
A woman who is warm very early, resists any plan to meet, and then asks for money, gift cards or crypto is running a script. Stop and report her. Never send money to someone you have not met, whatever the story.
Run a few checks before you invest. Look at all of her photos, ask for a short video call, and suggest a specific day to meet. Real women agree, offer another day or say no. Fake accounts always have a reason, and then another one. If she pushes you off the app very early, treat that as a warning as well.
The paid side is ordinary, but read the terms
Tantan sells subscription tiers. VIP gives unlimited Likes and removes ads, See Who Likes Me shows the people who liked you, and the higher tiers add Super Likes, boosts and read receipts. The plans renew automatically unless you cancel them, and in some regions the app also sells virtual goods.
That is a normal business model, not a warning sign. The caution is the same as on any app. Read the renewal terms before you pay, set a reminder for the day you want to decide, and do not buy a higher tier on impulse. A free account lets you send unlimited predefined communications to matches, so you can learn whether women reply before you spend anything.
Is it worth your evenings?
This is the question most men skip. Tantan's own pages do not tell you how active it is in your city, and a dating app is only useful if women near you actually use it.
Find out by trying. Download the international version, set up your page and see whether the app shows you women nearby. If it shows a handful of inactive accounts, do not spend your evenings there. If it shows plenty of people who look active, give it two weeks.
How to test it
Use real, recent photos that show your face and ordinary life. Tantan sends you recommendations with a compatibility score, a short description and a main photo, so the photo and the description carry a lot of weight.
Open with one specific thing from her description, in a sentence or two, and ask a question she can answer in a few words. Personal messages are limited on a free account, so each one has to count. If your first language is not hers, keep the wording simple, since short sentences read friendlier and translate better.
Then suggest a plan after a few exchanges, such as a coffee, a walk or a Tribe event. Count your matches, the conversations that turned into a plan and the dates. a dating coach says to test one change at a time and keep what works. If the numbers are low after two weeks, a bigger local app will give you more chances for the same effort.
