You need Tinder Gold. Tinder's FAQ lists Top Picks as a Gold feature, alongside seeing who already likes you, weekly Super Likes and a monthly Boost. Platinum includes everything in Gold, so it opens Top Picks too. Tinder Plus does not.

Which tier opens it

Tinder has three paid tiers: Plus, Gold and Platinum. Top Picks belongs to the middle one.

Tinder describes Plus as including unlimited likes and Rewinds. It adds Passport, no ads and Incognito mode. Top Picks is not on that list. A man who pays for Plus and goes looking for Top Picks will not find it, and the reason is the tier, not a hidden setting.

Platinum includes everything in Gold. It adds priority likes and messaging before matching. If you are on Platinum, you already have it.

How to subscribe

Open Tinder, tap the profile icon, tap Settings, then choose Tinder Gold or one of the other tiers.

Tinder's FAQ names the tier that includes Top Picks. It does not describe which screen shows it, and screens move between versions of an app. So the dependable route is to subscribe to Gold, then look through the main areas of the app for Top Picks. If you cannot find it after subscribing, check which tier your account is on before anything else.

What a Top Pick is

A Top Pick is a suggestion that Tinder makes for you, a woman it thinks you may want to look at.

It is not a woman who has already liked you. Tinder has a separate place for that, which is the Likes page, also a Gold and Platinum feature. If your real goal is to see who has liked you, the Likes page is the answer, and Top Picks is a different tool.

Treat a Top Pick like any other card

The danger of a curated set is that it feels like an endorsement. The usual result is that a man likes nearly every card in it.

a dating coach's view is that liking everyone teaches the app nothing useful, and that it makes you look unselective. Your likes are how Tinder learns your taste, and a Top Pick is no exception.

Read each one the way you would read any card. Look through her photos. Read what she wrote. Ask whether you would be glad to match and whether you have something specific to say to her. If you do, like her and write a first line about her, not a greeting. If you do not, pass without guilt.

Check the Likes page first

If you have Gold, open the Likes page before you open Top Picks. The women there have already liked you, which makes each of them a match waiting for one swipe from you. Replies tend to come more easily from a woman who has already shown interest than from one who has never seen your card.

Top Picks is the better place for the women you might otherwise miss. Treat the two as different jobs and you will spend your time in the right order.

A short routine for a Top Picks session

Keep it brief. Open the set and read each card for about as long as you would read a stranger's message. Look at her photos first, then her words. Like only the women where you can already name something to say to her. When you match, write the first line before you do anything else, so the match does not sit and cool.

Then stop. A set has an end, and most of the value is in the cards you actually read. Scrolling past the point where you are really looking just teaches your thumb to like everything.

Is it worth paying for Gold just for this

For most men, no. Top Picks is one item on a list of four, and its main value is convenience.

Gold is a better purchase for the feature that shows you women who have already liked you, because those women have already said yes to something. Top Picks only saves you some searching.

If you are weighing the cost, ask whether you would pay for Gold anyway, for the whole list. If you would, Top Picks is a pleasant extra. If you would not, a single feature of this kind is a weak reason to pay.

Make the picks better first

Because Tinder chooses the picks for you, a vague page and careless likes give it little to go on. Fill in the interests and lifestyle details that are true of you, and keep your likes honest, so what you receive is closer to what you want.

Then give it two weeks. Count how many Top Picks you liked, how many matched with you and how many replied to your first message. If the answer is close to none, the cause is more likely your photos and your opener than the feature, and a stronger page will help far more than any extra row of cards.
