The queue never ends, there are women everywhere, and somehow the whole thing is harder than it was in a smaller place. That is not bad luck. A deep pool changes who has the leverage in every conversation you start.
What a deep pool actually changes
More people does not mean more attention for you. It means more of everything for everyone, and attention is the thing that stays fixed.
An attractive woman in a large city can open an app and find more interest in a morning than she can deal with in a month. She is not reading your message alongside three others. She is reading it alongside a queue she has already stopped keeping up with.
None of that is about her being difficult. It is arithmetic. If you write to her as though yours is the only conversation she has open, you will be wrong, and it will show in how long you are willing to wait.
She has four other conversations running
Assume it. Not to feel bad about it, but because it tells you what your messages are competing with.
What that means in practice is that a conversation which stays pleasant and goes nowhere will die, and you will never know why. She did not decide against you. Somebody else suggested a bar on Thursday while you were still asking about her weekend.
It also means the clock on a match is short. Two days of friendly back and forth that does not turn into a plan is usually two days spent on a conversation that has already been overtaken.
Speed to a real plan beats being interesting
The single biggest change a man can make in a city is to stop trying to win the messaging and start trying to end it.
You do not need to be the funniest man in her phone. You need to be the one who gave her something specific and easy to say yes to before the interest cooled. A named place, a named evening, a sentence she can answer with one word.
"There's a wine bar near yours I keep meaning to try. Thursday or Saturday?" sent on day one beats four days of good material, most of the time, and it beats it comfortably.
The men who resist this are usually waiting for a moment that feels earned. In a deep pool that moment does not arrive. The conversation just gets quieter until it stops.
What the first day should look like
Match, send something that shows you read her profile, and let her answer. Then, after one or two exchanges, put a plan in front of her.
That is the whole shape of it. Anything longer is you buying time you do not have. If she is interested, an invitation on day one reads as decisive rather than fast. If she is not, you have found out in a day instead of a fortnight.
Keep it concrete. A place with a name, one or two evenings, and nothing that requires her to plan anything. The most common reason a keen woman never becomes a date is that neither person ever said a day out loud.
Why the clever opener matters less here than you think
Men in cities spend enormous effort on the first line, because the competition is obvious and they assume that is where it is won.
The opener gets you a reply. It does not get you a drink. What decides the drink is whether the conversation reached a plan while she still remembered matching with you.
So make the first message easy to answer, and spend your effort on what happens in the four messages after it. A good opener followed by drifting is far more common, and far more expensive, than a plain opener followed by a clear invitation.
Volume is available, attention is not
In a city you can swipe forever, and men do. Then they hold thirty matches, answer eight of them badly, and let the rest sit unopened.
Thirty matches you cannot service is worse than eight you can. Each unanswered match is a woman who liked you and is watching nothing happen, and the app is showing her plenty of men who do answer.
Cap what you take on. Work the conversations you have until each one is either a plan or finished, and only then go back to swiping. That is far closer to how the successful men in a city actually operate than any amount of clever filtering.
Logistics decide more dates than charm does
A large city is several cities that do not like visiting each other. Forty minutes across town on a weeknight kills more first drinks than anything you said.
Know which side of the city she is on before you suggest somewhere, and either pick a place near her or pick somewhere genuinely in the middle. Have two or three bars you can name without thinking, in the parts of town you actually go to. Suggest the evening rather than asking what she is up to this week.
Men lose dates on this constantly, and it never feels like the reason, because the conversation was going well right up until the scheduling.
When the city is fine and the hours are the problem
The version of this that most men are actually living is not a bad profile. It is a decent profile on a job that eats the evening, so replies land a day late, plans get suggested a week after they would have worked, and the matches pile up unopened.
In a deep pool that is expensive, because the window on each match is genuinely small and the woman on the other end has no shortage of alternatives.
That is where handing it over changes the outcome rather than the workload. One team rebuilds the photos and the profile, runs the apps every day, answers while a conversation is still warm rather than when you finally get home, and moves the promising ones to a plan on your calendar in the part of town that makes sense. In a city with options everywhere, the man who gets the dates is usually not the most interesting one in her messages. He is the one who was there while she was still deciding.
