Most men get few messages on Plenty of Fish for one of four reasons. Women are not seeing your page, they see it and feel no pull, you are searching too wide an area, or you are waiting for a first move that the site leaves to the woman. Work through them in that order, because the first two decide most of the result.

Start with what you actually expect

On a free account, most conversations begin one of two ways. You and a woman like each other in Meet Me and become a Mutual Match, which gives you unlimited messaging. Or one of you writes first, and the other chooses whether to answer.

That second rule matters. A first message to a woman you have not matched with is hers to answer or like back. If she does neither, the sender cannot keep writing. So a man who sits and waits for women to write to him is relying on the least common path. Most of your conversations will start because you wrote a good first line to a woman who looked like a fit.

She cannot write to a page she never sees

Women find men through search by distance and age, and through Meet Me. If your location or age is set wrong, you are sitting in the wrong results. Check both before anything else.

Then look at how recently you used the site. A page that nobody has touched for weeks gives a woman less reason to believe you will answer. Log in, use search, like a few women, and write to a few. Activity is the cheapest improvement you can make.

Be honest about distance too. Search filters by how far someone is from you, and a woman forty minutes away is a harder date than a woman across town. A man who sets a realistic distance sees women who can actually meet him, and those women see him.

Your lead photo decides the click

When a woman sees you in a row of results, she has one picture and a few words to go on. That picture needs your face clear, in daylight, with a relaxed expression. A cropped group shot, sunglasses, or a picture taken years ago tells her nothing and costs you the click.

You also need a main photo before you can send anything. If yours is missing, fix that first, because it blocks the whole site.

a dating coach's rule for every app is that your results depend on whether the women on it are really looking to date, and also on how you show up. You control the second part. A clear face and one or two other recent photos beat a full gallery of mixed quality.

Your page gives her nothing to write about

A woman reads your headline and a few lines, then decides whether replying is easy. If you wrote "love to laugh, love to travel, looking for my partner," she has nothing to pick up. She cannot ask about it, argue with it, or recommend anything.

Replace the general line with a specific one. Name the thing you do on a weekday evening, or the food you will defend, or the odd job you had. Then end on a small question she could answer in one sentence. A page that hands her a way to start gets more messages than a page that asks her to do the work.

Liking everyone teaches the site the wrong thing

a dating coach points out that apps notice a man who likes every woman and treat him as less selective, which hurts who he is shown to. Plenty of Fish gives you search filters and Meet Me for a reason. Use them to choose.

Pick the women you would truly be glad to hear from. Like those, and write to them the same day. Fewer, better choices produce more replies than a fast stream of casual likes, and the women who like you back will be women you want to meet.

Messages can vanish before she reads them

Plenty of Fish removes blocked or filtered messages altogether, and it does not restore them. A message can disappear with no notice, and the page will not tell you why. Conversations older than 30 days are also removed from the inbox, so an old chat that seems to have vanished may just be aged out.

You cannot control that, and you cannot know when it happened. What you can control is what you send. Write each first line fresh, mention one real detail from her page, and finish on a question. A line written for one woman gets answered more often than a pasted line sent to ten.

What to change this week

Pick the cheapest fixes first, and change one thing at a time so you can tell what worked.

  1. Check that your age and city are correct, and set a distance you would honestly travel on a weeknight.
  2. Swap in a clear, recent lead photo with your face in daylight.
  3. Rewrite your headline and opening line so they say one specific thing.
  4. Like fewer women, and write to each one the same day.
  5. Count what happens over two weeks: likes sent, matches, replies, and dates planned.

If you pay for Premium, you can see everyone who has liked you in one view, and a woman who already liked you is the easiest conversation on the app. That helps only if you are already getting some likes. If none are arriving, fix the photo and the headline first, because more tools will only show you more of nothing.

When a chat is going well, suggest a day and a place within a few messages. My range is about four to seven short messages, each with a purpose. A woman who has a plan with you is far less likely to drift away than one you have only been chatting with.
