What Does the Diamond Icon on Tinder Do?

The diamond icon in the upper right of your Discovery screen opens Tinder's AI-powered matching. You answer a set of questions once, and after that you reveal a personalized Daily Drop of recommendations. Tinder describes the idea as a daily, curated recommendation based on a Q&A, instead of endless Liking. Sharing your camera roll is optional, and the feature is only in select markets.

The first time you tap the diamond, Tinder asks you questions. You only do this once. From then on, the diamond is where you go to reveal your Daily Drop, the recommendations Tinder has picked for you that day.

The Daily Drop sits alongside your normal Discovery screen rather than replacing it. You can still use Tinder the usual way, and Tinder says the AI-powered matching is optional.

The questions are the main thing the feature has to go on, so they are worth answering slowly and honestly rather than tapping through.

Men tend to answer these the way they think a woman wants them to. They say they love hiking when they have hiked twice, or that they want something serious when they are not sure. The picks that come back are then built for a man who does not exist, and the women in them feel slightly wrong in ways that are hard to name.

Answer as the man you are on an ordinary week. Be specific where you can. If your Saturdays are football and a long lunch, say that. You will get fewer surprises and better picks.

Tinder makes this optional. It says camera roll access can help identify relevant interests, which means it may pick up on things you do but never thought to mention.

That changes how you should treat each one. A woman in your Daily Drop deserves a full look at her page, the way you would treat a friend's introduction rather than a stranger on a busy street. Read what she wrote. Look at all of her photos. Decide whether you would actually want to take her out.

Men who flick through a Daily Drop at the same speed they swipe get nothing out of it that ordinary Discovery would not have given them.

It also suits a different mood. Some evenings you have twenty minutes and want to work through the app properly. Other days you have two minutes on the train. A Daily Drop fits the second kind of day well, because it is a chosen set rather than an endless stack, and you can give each pick real attention in the time you have.

A match from a curated pick is still just a match. She does not owe you a reply because an algorithm put you together, and "Tinder thinks we'd get on" is not an opening line.

Write to her the way you would write to anyone worth writing to. Pick one specific thing from her page and do something with it. A playful guess about her works. So does a light tease or a question only she could answer. Keep it short, so she can reply in one line.

Then move it along. Once she is answering warmly and quickly, suggest a plan. A good pick that turns into three weeks of small talk has wasted the pick.
