How to Delete Your Match.com Account

In the Match app, tap your Profile, then the gear icon, then Manage Account, then Delete Account, and choose Delete My Account. On the website, click the profile icon, then Manage Account, then Delete Account. Deletion is permanent: it removes your matches, your messages and everything on your page, and Match does not send an email to confirm it.

The steps Match gives for the app:

1. Tap your Profile.
2. Tap the gear icon.
3. Tap Manage Account.
4. Tap Delete Account.
5. Choose Delete My Account.

The last screen is the one that matters. Until you choose Delete My Account, nothing has happened, so if you are having second thoughts halfway through, you can simply back out.

On a computer the route is shorter:

1. Click the profile icon.
2. Click Manage Account.
3. Click Delete Account.

Both routes end in the same place, so use whichever device is in front of you.

Match is clear that deleting is permanent. Your matches go, your messages go, and your profile goes with them.

That last part is easy to underrate. The photos you uploaded, the answers you wrote, the preferences you set: all of it has to be rebuilt from nothing if you ever come back. The conversations are the bigger loss. A woman you were halfway to asking out has no way to find you again once the chat is gone.

So treat deletion as the end, not a pause. If there is any chance you will want Match again in a month, it is the wrong button.

Match does not send a confirmation email when you delete. If you are waiting for one before you believe it worked, you will be waiting a long time.

If you went through every step and chose Delete My Account at the end, it is done. You do not need to wait for anything in your inbox.

Your subscription. Deleting and cancelling are two separate actions. If you pay for Match, turn off auto-renewal under Manage Subscription first, so you know exactly where your billing stands before the account disappears.

Your open conversations. Look through your messages before they vanish. If a woman has already agreed to meet, or you were close to setting something up, move it off the app first. Ask for her number with a short, direct line: "I'm getting off Match. Want to grab that drink Thursday? Send me your number." A woman who was enjoying the chat will usually say yes. One who does not was not going to turn into a date anyway.

If what you want is time off, Match lets you hide your profile while you take a break. Your account stays intact, your photos stay uploaded, and you can come back without starting over. If you pay, you can also turn off auto-renewal and let the subscription run to the end of its term.

Delete when you are sure. Being in a relationship, having met someone, or knowing you are done with Match for good are all good reasons. A bad week is not.

A lot of the time, deleting is not really about Match. It is about a result: a trickle of matches, conversations that stall after three lines, dates that never land.
