You cancel in the same place you paid, and you do it at least 24 hours before the next billing period starts. Hinge subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel in time. Deleting the app does not cancel anything. The steps depend on whether you paid through Apple, Google Play or Hinge itself, and all three are short.

Find out where you paid first

Pressing the wrong cancel button is an easy way to stay subscribed. Hinge, Apple and Google each run their own billing, and cancelling in one does nothing to a charge made by another.

Look at your last receipt. A receipt from Apple points to the App Store, and a receipt from Google points to Google Play. If the charge came from Hinge directly, it was paid through Hinge payment, which Stripe powers. If you cannot tell, check your phone's subscription list before you hunt through Hinge's menus.

If you paid through Apple or Google Play

On iPhone, if you subscribed with the App Store or your Apple ID, open your Apple subscription page. Tap Hinge, then tap Cancel Subscription. Do it from the Apple page, since Apple is the one billing you.

On Android, open your Google Play subscription page, tap Hinge, then tap Cancel Subscription. The cancel button lives in Google Play, since that is the account being charged.

If you paid with Hinge payment

If you subscribed with Hinge payment, open the Hinge app. Tap the gear icon to open Account Settings, tap Cancel Subscription and follow the prompts.

This is the only route that runs through Hinge itself. It also has a trap, covered next.

The traps that cost men money

Three things catch men out.

Cancelling too late. Hinge says you need to cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing period. Cancel the evening before renewal and you may pay for another round. Set a reminder a few days early.

Deleting the app. Removing the Hinge app from your phone does not cancel your subscription. Neither does deleting a Hinge account that you bought through the App Store or Google Play. The store can keep billing you.

Deleting the account to cancel. If you paid with Hinge payment, deleting your account does cancel the subscription immediately. But you permanently lose any benefits you had left, so only do it if you are certain you are done. If you only want to stop the charge, use Cancel Subscription instead.

Going down a tier

If you are on HingeX and want the cheaper Hinge+, Hinge says you must cancel HingeX first and then subscribe to Hinge+. There is no downgrade button. Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal so you are not billed for HingeX again, then subscribe to the lower tier.

Should you cancel at all

Cancelling is easy. Deciding is the harder part, so use evidence.

Look at the last month. How many of your matches came from times you had a paid feature, and how many would have come anyway? a dating coach treats paid features as multipliers. They give you more of what your page already earns. If your page earns little, the upgrade multiplied a small number, and cancelling costs you almost nothing.

If you only used the paid tier for a few busy weeks, cancel and subscribe again later when you will actually be on the app. A man who pays all year and logs in twice a month is subsidizing the app.

If your matches are doing fine and you are replying to all of them, the subscription may be earning its place. Keep it until your results change, then check again.

What to do with the saved money

If you cancel, put a fraction of what you saved into the thing that lasts. A better lead photo, taken in daylight by a friend, will help you on every app and on every future month. Subscriptions rent you attention. A good photo and a few sharp prompt answers keep working after you cancel.
