You cancel by turning off auto-renew in the account settings of the platform that charges you, not inside Down itself. On an iPhone that means your Apple subscription settings, and the switch has to be flipped at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Turning it off stops the next charge. It does not end the period you have already paid for.

Where the charge comes from

Down is free to download and use. The optional paid membership is what the App Store listing calls DOWN Private Membership, and lists as Down VIP.

The listing says payment is charged to your Apple account. It also says the subscription renews automatically unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Down's terms say the same thing in different words: you may cancel auto-renewal at any time through your platform account settings before the renewal date.

So the first question is who bills you, and the answer is the platform that processed your purchase.

The steps on an iPhone

If you bought through the App Store, the cancel button lives in your Apple settings:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your name at the top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select the Down subscription.
  5. Turn off auto-renew, or tap Cancel Subscription, and confirm.

Do it with room to spare. The listing says auto-renew must be off at least 24 hours before the period ends, so doing it on the last evening is the common way to pay for one more period you did not want.

If your charge came through some other platform, cancel there instead. Down's terms send billing and payment questions to the platform that processed the purchase, and say those are governed by that platform's policies.

Deleting the app is not cancelling

Men often delete Down from their phone and assume the billing stops. Down's terms put cancellation in your platform account settings, which is a different place from the app itself. Removing the app from your home screen does not touch the subscription.

After you cancel, open the subscription page once more and check that it shows an end date and no renewal date. That takes ten seconds and settles the question.

What cancelling does not do

The App Store listing says no cancellation of the current subscription is allowed during the active subscription period. In plain terms, you keep Down VIP until the end of the days you paid for, and then it stops. You do not get the rest of the period back.

Refunds are tighter still. Down's terms say all in-app purchases, including subscriptions, are final and non-refundable to the fullest extent permitted by law. They add that there are no refunds or credits for partial subscription periods or unused features. Any refund inquiry has to go to the platform that processed the purchase.

The practical rule: if you are going to cancel, cancel early in the period, not at the end of it, so the days you keep are the days you were going to use anyway.

Decide before you cancel

Before you flip the switch, spend two minutes on the numbers. How many conversations did the paid version produce, and how many turned into a plan? a dating coach's rule for any paid feature on a dating app is to test it and judge it by results. If it has not produced anything, cancel without guilt. If it has, you may be about to cut the one thing that was working.

He also says paying is not shameful in itself and that the error is paying by default and never checking. A subscription is one more habit that can run on without you.

If the paid features did not help, the cause is usually upstream of the subscription. Lead with a clear picture of your face, write one specific line a woman can answer, and reply to the matches who actually write back. Those three changes cost nothing and work on every app.

Do the last paid days some good

You may have days left after you cancel. Use them. Send the messages you were putting off. Ask the women you have been chatting with for a specific evening. Move the ones who agree onto a phone number, so the plan does not depend on an app.

That way, if you decide not to resubscribe, you leave with dates on the calendar instead of an expired membership.
