A like says you are interested. A match, and the chance to talk, happens only when she likes you back. Each app presents the same idea a little differently, and what you can see about the likes you receive depends on the app and on whether you pay.

Hinge

On Hinge you send a like by tapping the heart on a photo or a prompt. Adding a comment makes a response more likely.

After you like someone, that woman leaves your Discover feed until she responds. You cannot see the profiles you liked until those members choose to match with you. That is why a like can feel like it vanished.

If she likes you back, she appears as a match and you can start chatting.

Tinder

Tinder has a Likes page that shows who already liked you. It is available to Tinder Gold and Tinder Platinum subscribers.

Without a subscription, you do not get that list.

Bumble

Bumble's Liked You tab shows who liked you. Seeing everyone there requires Premium. From the tab, you swipe right to like back or left to pass.

Bumble says there is no way to see everyone you have liked or SuperSwiped. Your matches do appear in the Chats tab, so you can always find the women who liked you back.

What free members see

The free view is deliberately partial. On Hinge, free members see one incoming like at a time, with a choice to Match or Skip. Hinge+ and HingeX subscribers see everyone who liked them at once.

That changes how you behave. With one at a time, you answer in the order the app serves them. With the whole list, you can pick the women you most want.

Whether the paid view is worth it depends on how many dates it actually gets you. Count the dates, not the likes.

On Bumble the problem runs the other way. Since the app gives you no list of everyone you have liked, the Chats tab becomes your record. A woman who appears there liked you back, and the ones who never appear did not. Do not spend time wondering about the second group.

Do likes work?

A like is cheap, and a cheap thing rarely wins on its own. The apps do not publish a number for how often a like becomes a match, so do not trust anyone who quotes one. What Hinge does say is that adding a comment makes a response more likely.

A like works when it is attached to something she can respond to. A bare heart tells her nothing about you, and she decides in a second whether to open your page.

a dating coach's idea of app time is short, focused sessions with the best leads handled first. A like is the cheapest part of that. The expensive part is the conversation that follows, so put your effort where the date comes from.

How to send a like that gets an answer

  1. Pick one specific photo or prompt that actually interests you.
  2. Add a short comment that shows you read it. A line about the thing she wrote beats a generic compliment.
  3. Do not stack ten likes in a row without reading. Slow and specific beats fast and empty.
  4. When she likes back, send the first message the same day.

What to do with likes you receive

Answer the ones you want while she is still fresh in her own mind. A woman who liked you is on the app now, and she may be talking to other men.

If her like came with a comment, answer the comment. She chose that line as her way into a conversation with you.

If you get a like from a woman you are unsure about, look through her page for one thing you would genuinely enjoy talking about. If you cannot find one, skip her. A conversation you do not enjoy rarely becomes a date you do.

Do not let the tab become your only source. The women in it chose you first, which is nice, but they are not automatically the women you most want. Spend part of every session liking the ones you would actually take out.
