A right swipe in the People tab shows a woman you are interested. If she likes you too, the two of you match. Then each of you gets one opening message before the chat fully opens, and you both have 72 hours from matching to send it. If nobody writes in that time, the match expires.

The like waits for her

On its own, a right swipe is only your half of the question. Nothing else happens until she answers it.

She may find you in her People tab and like you back, and that makes a match. If she has Premium, Bumble gives her a Liked You queue where she can see who has already liked her, and match with you from there. If she passes on you, or never comes across you, the like simply sits there and goes nowhere.

So a man who swipes right has not committed to anything. The commitment starts when a match appears.

The match, and one opening message each

When you match, Bumble does not open a free-for-all chat. Both of you get one opening message before the conversation fully opens. Bumble says this works the same way for everyone, and that you both have 72 hours from matching to send yours.

If one person writes first, the other has 72 hours from that point to reply. Once she has replied, the chat opens and you carry on as normal. If neither person sends anything within 72 hours of the match, it expires.

A Note you send before you match counts as your opening message. If you spend the effort on a thoughtful Note, you have already used your turn when she likes you back.

The daily allowance

Bumble sets a daily like allowance, and it says the limit exists to encourage more intentional matching. Once you reach it, your swipes refresh 24 hours later. Hit the limit at 8 PM, and you are ready again at 8 PM the next day. Premium removes the limit.

That allowance quietly works in your favor. A man with unlimited likes is tempted to swipe on everything. A man with a limit has a reason to spend each like on a woman he would actually take out.

You cannot take it back

Bumble says a right swipe cannot be undone. Backtrack is the undo arrow in the top-right corner, and it only reverses a left swipe. It also needs Boost, Premium or Premium+.

If a right swipe turns into a match you do not want, you have two options. You can unmatch her, or you can let the match expire by not writing. Bumble offers both. When you unmatch, it sends her no separate notification.

What you will not see

Bumble does not show read receipts or online or activity status in chats. You will not know when she has seen your message or when she last opened the app.

That takes away a favorite way of tormenting yourself. A quiet chat tells you nothing more than that she has not replied yet. Write something good, and give her time.

Choose who you swipe right on

How you swipe affects what you get, and two views are worth holding together.

a dating coach's view, from years of teaching online dating, is that apps notice how selective you are. Swipe right on nearly everyone, and the app can read you as unselective, which it may treat as unattractive. It also has little reason to show you its best-looking women if you will say yes to any of them. He says automatic right swiping no longer works on most apps.

Bumble's own advice on standing out pulls the other way. It warns that if you say no to almost everyone, you may miss good connections.

The sensible line between them is deliberate swiping. Look at more than her first photo. Read one of her answers. Swipe right when you would genuinely like to meet her and can think of one thing to ask her.

Be ready to write when she matches

A match runs against a clock, so open the chat while she still remembers you, and write something that could only have been written to her. Ask about the trip in her photo or answer one of her prompts with a real opinion.

a dating coach's rule for getting the date is to set it up fast. If you can plan it for the same night or the next day, there is nothing to forget, and no gap for the match to fall into. So when the conversation is going well, suggest a specific evening and a place near you, and swap numbers once she agrees.
