When you send a Super Like, Tinder prioritizes you for the woman you sent it to, and if she Likes you back, it is a match. To send one, tap the blue star while you are looking at her card. You can buy Super Likes in packs under Settings, and Tinder Gold and Tinder Platinum subscribers get free Super Likes every week.
What a Super Like changes
A normal Like puts you in the running. A Super Like asks Tinder to give you priority with one particular woman. Tinder's help page describes it as prioritizing you for the person you sent it to.
What it does not change is her decision. She still looks at your photos, reads what you wrote, and decides. If she Likes you back, you have a match, exactly as you would after an ordinary Like. If she passes, the Super Like is spent and there is no match.
So think of it as a way to be considered, not a way to be chosen. It can help a woman notice you when she otherwise might not have. It cannot make up for a card that does not appeal to her once she looks.
How to send one
Open a woman's card and tap the blue star. That is the whole action. There is nothing to write and no extra step.
Because it takes one tap, the decision matters more than the action. It is easy to spend a Super Like on a woman you only glanced at, and much harder to get any value from one sent that way.
Where Super Likes come from
There are two sources. You can buy Super Likes in packs, which Tinder sells under Settings. And if you subscribe to Tinder Gold or Tinder Platinum, you get free Super Likes every week.
Pack sizes and prices are shown in the app, so check your own screen rather than trusting what a friend paid. The practical point is simpler. Your supply is limited, so each one should go somewhere it matters.
If you are on Gold or Platinum, start with the free weekly ones before you buy a pack. They give you a feel for whether Super Likes do anything for you, and buying more only makes sense once you know they do.
Why a dating coach is wary of them
a dating coach has two views of the Super Like, and both are worth knowing.
In one video he describes Super Likes and roses as a way to get noticed by more attractive women, because they bring your interest to her attention. He also names the cost. You give away a little power, so the rest of your game has to be better afterwards to make up for it.
On his podcast he is more skeptical. He says he has used them very little, partly on principle, and that the few times he tried them the results were not impressive. He is not convinced they get a man matched much more than an ordinary Like. He has also seen clients who sent Super Likes on autopilot get some matches from it, while coming across as more eager than they meant to.
When one is worth sending
Use a Super Like when you can name a specific reason you chose her. Something she wrote made you laugh. One of her photos is somewhere you know well. You already have a real opener in mind.
In that case the extra attention is backed by something, and the conversation that follows has somewhere to go. If you cannot name the reason, send an ordinary Like. It costs you nothing, and it keeps the star for a woman who deserves it.
Three ways men waste them
The first is spending them on everyone. A Super Like works because it is rare. Sent to every woman who looks good at a glance, it stops meaning anything, and you run out before the woman you really wanted comes along.
The second is sending one to a woman you barely looked at. If you only saw her first photo, you do not know whether you have anything to say to her. The Super Like promises interest you cannot yet back up.
The third is following it with nothing. A Super Like and then "hey" is the worst pairing on the app. The star says she is special, and the message says you have no idea why.
Make the first message match the star
If she matches with you after a Super Like, your first line carries more weight than usual. You sent the strongest signal the card allows, so the message has to show the effort did not stop the moment she said yes.
Open with the specific reason you chose her, and keep it relaxed and light. Do not mention the Super Like, and do not pile on compliments. The star already said you were interested. Your message should show that you are also good company, which is the part that gets her to reply and, later, to agree to a drink.
