If you are on an Android phone, Tinder says the missing option may mean it no longer accepts the payment method you used when you first subscribed. In that case there is no button to find. You cancel your subscription, wait for it to end, and then start a new Gold or Platinum subscription once the old one has expired.
The payment method is the usual cause
An upgrade normally changes the plan you already have, using the payment method already on file. If Tinder no longer takes that method, it cannot run the change, so the option does not appear.
Nothing is wrong with your account. Nothing is wrong with the app either. The plan you have simply cannot be moved up in place, so you replace it instead.
Where the button normally sits
For comparison, the normal upgrade takes a minute. You open Tinder, tap the profile icon, go to Settings, and select Get Tinder Gold or Get Tinder Platinum. Tinder says the plan should update immediately.
So check there first. If you see Get Tinder Gold or Get Tinder Platinum in Settings, the upgrade works for you and you can ignore the rest of this. If they are missing on an Android phone, the payment method explanation is the one Tinder gives.
Cancel, wait, then subscribe again
The route is three steps.
- Cancel your current subscription.
- Wait for it to expire.
- Start a new Gold or Platinum subscription.
Cancelling does not end your plan early. Tinder's Terms of Use say you keep your subscription benefits until the end of the period you already paid for, and then it expires without renewing. So you lose nothing by cancelling today. You just have to come back on the right day.
Set a reminder on your phone for the date the plan ends. The gap between the old plan expiring and the new one starting is the only gap you have to manage.
How to cancel on Android
Where you cancel depends on who bills you. Tinder says an order number starting with GPA means Google Play, and you cancel in the Google Play app under Payments and Subscriptions, then Subscriptions. If you paid by card or PayPal inside the Android app, you cancel inside Tinder instead, under Manage Payment Account.
Cancel in the right place. Pressing cancel with a company that does not bill you does nothing, and the plan carries on.
If you are on an iPhone
Tinder's explanation for a missing button is about Android phones. On an iPhone, the upgrade sits in the same place, under Settings, as Get Tinder Gold or Get Tinder Platinum.
If you tap it and get a Purchase Failed error instead, that is a different problem. Tinder says it means your Apple ID is already tied to an active subscription on a different Tinder account. Each Apple ID can hold only one Tinder account and one subscription at a time, so the fix there starts with that other account.
Pick your payment method before you resubscribe
Since the old method is the problem, choose the new one before the plan runs out.
Tinder says it accepts most credit and debit cards, though the options vary by location and device. It also warns that some gift cards, prepaid cards and select debit cards do not support recurring payments for subscriptions. A subscription is a recurring payment, so use a card that allows them.
Make sure the upgrade is worth the trouble
Replacing a plan is a small hassle, which makes it a good moment to ask whether you need the higher tier at all.
Gold adds the view of who Likes You, weekly Super Likes and a monthly Boost. Platinum adds Prioritized Likes, which Tinder says helps your Likes get seen faster, ahead of people who do not subscribe, without promising they are seen. Gold helps if women already like you and you are losing them in the stack. Platinum helps if you like first and hear back rarely.
a dating coach's rule for anything the apps sell is to test it and drop it if nothing changes. He also calls paid features multipliers, which only work on something that is already there. So look at your last few weeks first. If your plan brought in a steady number of matches, a higher tier has something to build on. If it brought in very few, spend the waiting period changing your lead photo and your opening line instead. Both cost nothing, and both are what women actually respond to.
