Because the app takes your location from your phone, and something is stopping the phone from giving it a clean reading. The usual causes are location access switched off for the app, a VPN, a weak connection, or an old setting you never updated after you moved. Fix those in that order and the right city comes back in most cases.
How the apps get your location
Bumble says your phone's GPS decides your location in the app. It also says your general location cannot be customized. Hily says it uses your phone's location data to show people nearby and needs location access allowed. happn says you must turn on location services in your phone settings or you will not cross paths with anyone.
Hinge works differently, and it is the one that catches men out. It does not automatically update your location each time you log in. After you move or travel, you have to update it yourself.
So there are two kinds of wrong. On Bumble, Hily and happn the phone is feeding the app a bad reading. On Hinge the app is holding on to an old answer.
The fixes Bumble recommends
For a wrong location on Bumble, the app's own list is short and in a useful order.
- Check that location access is enabled for the app.
- Turn off any VPN.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data.
- Update the app.
- Restart the phone.
The VPN step is the one men skip. A VPN makes your phone look as if it is somewhere else, and the app believes it. The switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data is on Bumble's list too, and it takes ten seconds to try.
The fix on Hinge
Open your profile and find the Location field under My Vitals. You can tap the Compass icon to use your device location, or type a city, neighborhood, address or zip code. Hinge shows only the neighborhood name, never an exact address, so you are not giving away where you live.
Do this every time you travel or move. A man who forgets spends weeks in the feed of the city he left.
The fix on Hily and happn
Hily places you near the closest city or town, based on your phone's location, and it needs location access allowed. If you want to see people somewhere else, its Global Search filter, a Premium feature, lets you pick other locations. That is a way to search other places, not a way to change where the app says you are.
happn needs location services on in your phone settings. Its steps on an iPhone are Settings, then happn, then Location, then Always. Set it to Always so happn can read your location while you move around.
Why a correct location matters to your results
Every woman you see, and every woman who sees you, comes from the location the app thinks you are in. A wrong location means you are being shown to women in a city you are not in and you are seeing women you cannot meet this week.
A date has to happen close to home. a dating coach is firm about this: do everything you can to make the date near your place, because a short trip home keeps a good night alive. An app that shows you women in the wrong part of the map works against that.
What not to do
Do not try to trick the app into showing a location that is not true. It will not make you more attractive, and a woman who matches with a man who says he is in her city and then is not feels lied to before the first drink. If you are moving or traveling, update it honestly and say so in your chat. "I'm in town until Sunday, free Friday?" does more than a fake pin ever could.
If you have done every step and the location is still wrong, contact the app's support with a screenshot of what it shows. The fix is usually one of the five steps, but a stuck setting is worth reporting.
