Usually because you have already seen everyone nearby who fits your preferences. Once that happens, Hily may start showing you people who live farther out instead of leaving Finder empty. If you only want people within your distance setting, check your Finder filters, switch off Expand search range, and make sure the app still has permission to use your location.

What is going on

Hily works through the people near you who fit what you asked for. In a big city that pool is deep. In a smaller town, or with tight filters on age and distance, you can reach the end of it sooner than you would expect.

At that point the app can show you nothing, or it can show you someone a little farther away. With Expand search range switched on, it does the second. So the faraway faces are not a glitch. They are a sign that you have already been through the local pool.

The other usual cause is location. Hily places you using your phone's location, so if the app has lost that permission, it may not know where you are now. The people in Finder can then look oddly distant.

The three things to check

  1. Open your Finder filters and look at your distance and your other preferences.
  2. Switch off Expand search range if you only want people within your distance setting.
  3. In your phone's settings, confirm that Hily still has permission to use your location.

After that, Finder should stay inside your distance. It will probably show you fewer people too. That is the honest trade, and it is worth knowing before you make it.

When far away is worth keeping

Switching the wider range off is not always the smart move.

If you live somewhere small, the women one town over may be the best options you have, and a half-hour drive is a fair price. If you drive into the city every week for work, a woman who lives near your office is as easy to see as one who lives next door.

So the real question is not the number of miles. It is whether a first date with her would be simple to set up. If it would, leave the wider range on and enjoy the bigger pool.

Why distance decides more than it looks

a dating coach treats the location of a first date as one of its most important parts. His rule is that the first venue should be a short walk from his own place, with no taxi and no long drive at the end of the night.

A woman an hour away breaks that rule before you have said hello. Every plan needs a long drive from one of you. The date also has a built-in clock, because somebody has to get home. Even when the chat is great, those dates are harder to arrange and quicker to fall apart.

So ask yourself a plain question. If you would never actually make the trip, liking her only fills your chats with conversations that lead nowhere.

What an empty neighborhood tells you

If you keep reaching the end of the local pool, that is useful information.

It can mean your filters are tighter than they need to be. Loosen the ones that do not really matter to you and see who appears. It can also mean you are going through plenty of women and getting little back. Either way, the fix is rarely a wider map. It is getting more out of the women who are already close.

My advice is to work on the top of the funnel first. That means more women seeing you, liking you and writing to you. The biggest lever is your photos, then what you write about yourself, then your first message. He has been doing online dating for over two decades, and he says his biggest lesson is constant experimentation. Swap your lead photo, rewrite one line, and watch what changes over the following week.

Make the nearby matches count

A small local pool rewards a man who treats each chat with care.

Skip the greeting you paste to everyone and write to her specifically. My test for a good opener is that it is relevant to her and hands her something to respond to. Keep the chat light, get a laugh or two, and float a plan once she is plainly having fun.

Then keep the plan close. Pick a spot near your place, name a day, and keep the ask simple. A handful of nearby women you actually take out will do more for you than a feed full of strangers two hours away.
