Because the pool near you is smaller than it looks. Feeld says it is a community that can be small outside major cities. Once you have liked or disliked everyone in your area, Discover has little new left to show, and fewer matches and messages follow. A few other things can put the same faces back in front of you, and every one of them is something you can change.

A small area runs out fast

Feeld is not Tinder. It does not have a city of strangers behind every screen in every town. Feeld itself says its community can be small outside major cities.

In a smaller place, the number of people who fit your distance, age range and filters is limited, and a man who opens the app most evenings can work through them quickly. After that, the app has little to show you except people you have already seen.

Work out which case you are in before you change anything. If the feed was lively last month and thin now, you have used up your area. If it was thin from the first day, your filters are too narrow.

Widen the filters that shrink the pool

Feeld suggests loosening your search settings. Four are worth checking:

  • The maximum distance.
  • The age range.
  • The number of genders and couple combinations you are looking at.
  • The desire and recently-online filters, which you can turn off.

Be honest about the first one. A wider distance gives you a longer feed and a harder second date. Someone forty minutes away is a different commitment from someone ten minutes away. Widen the age range and the genders and couples first, since those cost you nothing in travel.

The recently-online filter is the sneaky one. Turning it on feels like quality control, but it cuts out everyone who has not opened the app lately, and in a small area that removes a lot of an already short list.

Feeld's popular locations let any member browse profiles in a selection of major cities. It also offers virtual locations, which are for meeting people with shared interests remotely.

These are useful for looking around and for traveling. They are not a way to find a date at home, and they put you in front of members in that other place instead. If you are in a small town, a popular location tells you how a bigger feed feels without changing who you can actually meet.

People you disconnected from can come back

Disconnecting from someone deletes your chat history, and Feeld says that members you disconnect from may appear in your Discover feed again.

That explains one of the most common complaints. A man ends a conversation that was going nowhere, and a week later the same woman is back at the top of his feed. Nothing is broken. Disconnecting removes the conversation, not the person.

If you never want to see someone again, block instead. Blocking is permanent and cannot be undone, and a blocked profile will not appear in Discover, Who Likes You or Who Pings You. Use it for people you actually want gone, and think about it first, because there is no undo.

History for Majestic members

Majestic members can take a second look at profiles they passed on earlier, from the History screen. It is limited to a handful of profiles at a time, and they have to meet your current search settings.

So a second look is small by design. It will not refill a dry feed, and it is only useful if your taste has changed or you rushed past someone. It also depends on your search settings, so widening those is still the main fix.

When the pool is small, your page does more of the work

Here is the part that matters for results. When you cannot reach more people, the way to get more out of the same people is to improve what happens when they see you.

a dating coach breaks online dating into a series of ratios: how many people see you, how many like you, how many reply, how many give a number, and how many become dates. His first move with any man who complains is to ask which ratio is failing. A man who has already seen everyone in his area and has little to show for it usually has a problem at the first or second step. The photo and the page do not make a stranger want to know more.

In a big city you can hide that problem behind volume. In a small area you cannot, because there is no more volume. Fix the lead photo, make the first line of the bio something specific she can react to, and answer the people who have already shown interest before you spend time hunting for new faces.

A short list for tonight

  1. Open your search settings and widen the age range, the genders and couple combinations, and turn off the recently-online and desire filters.
  2. Check the distance and decide how far you would honestly travel for a second date.
  3. Look at who is in your feed that you disconnected from, and block anyone you never want to see.
  4. Rewrite the first photo or the first line of your page, then give the feed a few days.
