Bumble only offers its distance filter in certain countries. If you live outside that list, the control is simply not offered where you are. The list is long. It includes the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. It also includes Australia, Germany, India and Japan, and many others across Europe, Asia and the Americas.

The list is by country

Bumble's help page on filters names every country where the distance filter works. The other basic filters, age, verification, languages and shared interests, do not come with a country list like that. Distance is the one with a long published list of countries, and ethnicity preferences, the other place-bound option, are limited to the US and Canada.

So the first thing to do is check that page and find your country on it. If it is not there, nothing in your settings is broken. You have the same app as everyone else in your country, and nobody around you has the control either.

In a listed country and still no filter

If your country is on the list and the distance control is still missing, look at where Bumble thinks you are.

Bumble reads your location from your phone's GPS. If the app has you in the wrong place, what it offers you may not match where you actually live. Its location help page lists the things to rule out:

  • Location access is turned on for Bumble in your phone's settings.
  • Any VPN is switched off, since a VPN can interfere with location detection.
  • If you are on Wi-Fi, try mobile data, because some networks route through a different location.
  • The app is updated to the latest version.
  • If none of that works, restart the phone.

Those steps are about getting your location right. Bumble does not say they will bring a missing filter back, but a wrong location is the obvious thing to rule out first.

What you can still control

Without a distance filter you cannot set a radius yourself. You can still set everything else, and you can still control who you say yes to.

Bumble lets people show where they live and where they are from on their own profile. Use that. Before you swipe right, check where she is and ask yourself one plain question: would you actually travel there for a first drink on a weeknight?

Decide your honest answer once, in miles or in minutes, and apply it every time. In a big city it might be half an hour each way. In a small town it might be an hour. The number matters less than using the same one every night, so you are not deciding on a whim at eleven o'clock. That turns into a distance filter you run in your head, and it is often a better one, because you can make exceptions for a woman who is worth the drive.

Swiping without a distance limit

A deck with no distance setting mixes women from across the street with women from the next town. The mistake is swiping right on all of them and sorting it out later.

Sorting it out later costs more than it looks. Every match you make has to be answered, and a match two hours away usually ends in a long chat that never turns into a date. Be choosy at the swipe, while it still costs you nothing.

If she has not said where she lives, do not guess from her photos. Ask early in the conversation. It is a normal question, and the answer tells you straight away whether a weeknight drink is realistic.

Matches who live farther away

Some of the women you match with will be farther than ideal. That is not a reason to drop them, but it changes how you plan.

a dating coach's rule for where to hold a first date is simple. Near your place if you can, near hers if you cannot, and never stranded in the middle. A spot halfway between you means that if the evening goes well, neither of you is close to home, and it ends early for no good reason.

With real distance in play, that rule matters more. Ask her to come to your side of town first. If that is too far for her, offer to go to hers.

Say where you are in your first messages

If there is real distance between you, mention it early and lightly. Something as simple as saying you are over on the east side and asking which part of town she is in settles it in one line.

That saves both of you a week of chat that ends when someone finally checks a map. It also makes it easy to suggest a specific place near one of you, which is how a conversation turns into an evening.

If you are only in a place for a short visit, that is a different problem. Bumble's Travel Mode, a Premium feature, lets you appear in another city before you arrive. For your home city, though, the tools are the ones above: the right location, honest limits, and plans that are easy for her to say yes to.
