Messages almost always disappear because the match behind them is gone. The other person unmatched you, deleted their account, or was removed by the app, or on Bumble the match expired before anyone wrote. Your own messages rarely vanish by themselves. When the chat goes, every message in it goes with it, and the app usually cannot bring it back.

What each app says

On Bumble, a match expires if no one sends a message within 72 hours. Once the time runs out, the match disappears from the Chats tab unless Extend was used.

Bumble lists other reasons a match can vanish: the other person unmatched, deleted their account or was blocked for a violation, or you unmatched or removed them.

On Hinge, a match can disappear because the other person unmatched you, deleted their Hinge account, or had their profile removed for violating the Terms of Use.

Hinge says unmatching is permanent and removes the whole conversation. Hinge cannot restore a match, and individual messages cannot be deleted. So a chat that is there one day and gone the next has been closed by one of the two people, or removed by Hinge.

On OkCupid, an intro or message may be missing for several reasons. One person may have blocked the other, or the other person may have deleted their account. They may also be in a moderation hold, or banned. OkCupid also says messages are automatically deleted after six months.

On Badoo, an unmatch removes the conversation from both accounts. Chats also disappear if the other person deletes or deactivates their account, if they are suspended, or if you change your gender identity setting.

On happn, a Crush or message can vanish from the Messages page if the person blocked you, or deactivated or deleted their account.

The causes side by side

AppTypical reasons a chat vanishes
BumbleThe match expired, or one person unmatched, blocked or deleted
HingeAn unmatch, a deleted account, or a profile removed for breaking the rules
OkCupidA block, a deleted account, a moderation hold, a ban, or old messages cleared automatically
BadooAn unmatch, a deleted or suspended account, or a change to your gender identity setting
happnA block, or a deactivated or deleted account

What it usually means for you

The one cause you can control is the clock. On Bumble, a match that never gets a first message expires, and many chats die that way without anyone choosing to end them.

The rest are not in your hands. Someone unmatching you after a message has landed is a decision about the chat, and it tells you the chat was not going anywhere. A deleted account is no comment on you.

It is easy to take every vanished chat as a verdict. Most are not. Men who count the matches, replies, numbers and dates, as a dating coach describes online dating, see that a vanished chat is one lost reply and the list of other matches is long.

How to keep a chat from expiring

Send the first message early. On Bumble, a match that is a day old is already using the clock, and a short, specific opener gets an answer sooner than a long one.

Refer to something real in her page: a place she lists, a thing she is doing on the weekend. A line like "hello" gives her nothing to answer and is the most common reason a match goes quiet until it expires.

If she replies, move toward a plan within a few messages. A conversation that has a day and a place attached is much harder to lose than one that is only chat.

If a chat was a good one

Take her number or a second channel early, once she has shown interest. If the app deletes the match, you keep the line to her. Do it with a simple, light request when the chat is warm, and do not ask on the first message.

When messages vanish a lot

If most of your chats disappear within a day, read your first messages back. Nothing in the apps removes a chat because the opener was weak, but women unmatch or let a match lapse when the first line gives them no reason to stay. Fix the opener and the numbers come with it.
