Unmatch fails or goes missing for a short list of reasons: you are on the wrong screen, your connection is weak, or the chat is already gone because the other person ended it. Tinder says to open your chat with that person, tap the 3 dots in the top right-hand corner, and tap Unmatch. If matches or chats look wrong or go missing, check your connection, log out and back in, or delete and reinstall the app.

The steps

Open your chat with the person. Tap the 3 dots in the top right-hand corner. Tap Unmatch.

The button lives inside that chat, so you will not find it on the main deck or in a list of matches. If you are looking in the wrong place, that is the most common reason it seems to be missing.

What unmatching does

When you unmatch someone, they disappear from your match list and you disappear from theirs. Tinder says it is permanent and cannot be reversed, even if you did it by accident.

Tinder says the person you unmatch is not notified, but they may notice you are missing from their Matches. That is worth knowing if you are worried about the reaction. She will not get an alert, though she may see you gone.

Block while you are there

If it is available in your region, you can also choose to Block the profile while unmatching. Tinder says neither of you can then view the other's profile.

Use that when you want a clean break, for example with someone who keeps pushing after a no. It is not needed for an ordinary dead chat.

When the chat will not load

Tinder says that if matches or chats seem to be stuck or missing, check your connection, then log out and back in. You do that through the profile icon, Settings and Logout. If that does not fix it, delete the app and reinstall.

A chat that will not load can make the three dots or the Unmatch button fail to respond. Fix the app first, then try again.

When the match is already gone

Sometimes the reason you cannot unmatch is that you no longer have a match. If she ended it first, or deleted her account, the chat disappears from your list and there is nothing left to unmatch.

It is easy to read that as a glitch. Look for the chat. If it is not there, it is done.

Should you unmatch at all

Many men unmatch out of habit, or to tidy up. Think about it first, because Tinder says unmatching is permanent.

If a conversation has gone quiet, you can usually leave it. A quiet chat costs you nothing, and she may reply in a few days. Unmatch when there is a clear reason: she was rude, she asked for something you will not do, or you are clearly not a match.

a dating coach's approach to the apps is to keep your focus on the women who respond and not to spend energy managing the ones who do not. A long list of dead matches is not a problem worth solving by deleting each one by hand.

Ending a chat without agonizing

If you want out of a chat cleanly, say nothing and unmatch. A message announcing that you are leaving usually creates more drama than the silence would.

If she was rude or made you uncomfortable, Block while you unmatch where that option is offered. You are not obliged to explain yourself to anyone who made you uncomfortable.

If nothing works

Make sure you are on the latest version, since a reinstall puts you there. If the problem persists after you have checked your connection, logged out and reinstalled, contact Tinder and describe it in as much detail as you can.

The short version

Open the chat, tap the 3 dots, tap Unmatch. If it will not respond, fix your connection or reinstall, and remember that a chat that has vanished is already over. Save unmatching for conversations that need ending, and spend the rest of your attention on first lines that get replies.
