The Unmatch option lives in the top right corner of the conversation, behind the three dots. If you cannot find it or it will not work, there are three usual reasons. You may be on the wrong screen. The other person may have already unmatched you or left Hinge. Or the app may need a basic reset. All three are quick to check, and none of them needs a support ticket.

The steps

Open the conversation. Tap the three dots in the top right corner. Select a reason, then tap Unmatch to confirm.

The reason is a required step, which is why men sometimes think the button has done nothing. If you tapped the dots and then backed out, the unmatch never happened.

The faster way

From the Matches tab, swipe the person's chat to the left and select Unmatch. You do not have to open the conversation at all.

That route is useful when a chat will not load properly, because you can end it from the list instead. If one route misbehaves, try the other before assuming something is broken.

When the option is not there

If you cannot find the chat at all, the match may already be gone. Hinge lists three reasons a match disappears. The other person unmatched, they deleted their account, or their profile was removed for violating the Terms of Use.

In any of those cases there is nothing left to unmatch. The conversation is gone, and Hinge cannot restore a match once it has ended. You are not locked out of a button. The thing the button acts on no longer exists.

Some men find this out days later, when a woman they were talking to seems to have vanished. The chat is not hiding. She or Hinge ended it, and the best response is to move on to the conversations that are still alive.

When it will not respond

If the chat is there and the option fails, treat it as a technical problem. Hinge's first fix is to log out and back in. If that does not work, uninstall the app and reinstall it.

Check your connection first, since a weak signal can make a screen look dead when it is only slow. Switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data takes ten seconds and rules it out.

What unmatching does

Hinge says unmatching is permanent. The conversation disappears and you cannot message that person again. Hinge cannot bring a match back.

When you unmatch from the Matches screen, you also disappear from that person's view, and she cannot view or retrieve the conversation or the match. There is nothing to undo and no second chance to change your mind, so be sure before you confirm.

Hide it instead

If what you want is a cleaner list and not an ending, Hinge offers a Hide feature. It removes a conversation from view while keeping the connection intact.

That suits the chat that has gone quiet but is not dead, or a conversation you want out of your face for a week. Nothing is lost, and if she writes again you can pick it up.

Should you unmatch at all

Most of the time, probably not as often as you think. a dating coach's approach to the apps is built on volume at the front of the funnel: more women seeing you, more conversations, more dates. In that approach a dead chat costs you nothing and a clean list is a minor convenience.

Unmatch when the conversation is hostile, when she asks for something you will not do, or when you have decided you are not interested and want it over. Use Hide when you are unsure. Let a quiet chat stay quiet when nothing about it bothers you.

If you want it over after a date, a short, kind message is better than a silent unmatch. One line saying you had a good time but do not see it going further is enough, and then you can unmatch.

The short answer

Open the chat, tap the three dots in the top right, pick a reason and confirm Unmatch, or swipe the chat left in your Matches tab. If the option is missing, the match is probably already gone. If it fails, check your connection, log out and back in, and reinstall the app. If you are unsure you want it permanent, use Hide.
