Most often it is a weak or unstable internet connection. Bumble's troubleshooting article says a poor connection can cause trouble loading profiles, sending messages or updating your account. The fix is a short list, tried in order: switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, update or reinstall the app, force close it and reopen it, then log out and back in.

Start with the connection

Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way around, and try again. You can also toggle Airplane Mode on and off, which makes the phone reconnect.

If the message sends on one connection and not the other, you have found the problem, and it is not in your account. Then you know the other connection is the weak one.

Then the app itself

Update Bumble from the app store, since an old version causes trouble. Force close the app from your recent apps list and open it again. If that does nothing, log out and log back in.

Before you log out, make sure you can get back in. You need access to the phone number or login method on the account, so check that first.

Android and the other fixes on Bumble's list

On Android, Bumble suggests clearing the cache under Settings, Apps, Bumble, Storage. Clearing data does not delete your account.

Bumble also asks you to check that the app has permission for location, camera, photos and notifications. If your phone is nearly full, free up some storage. Turn off battery saver, a VPN or an ad blocker for a few minutes, since any of them can interfere with how the app connects.

Restarting the phone is on the list too. Turn it off for about 30 seconds and switch it back on.

When it is a problem on Bumble's side

Some problems cannot be fixed from your phone. Bumble keeps a list of known issues it is working on, including being unable to open certain messages in the Chats tab, and it says there is no workaround for those.

Error messages tell you something. Bumble says general errors such as Something went wrong or Try again later can come from network problems or a bug, and usually clear up if you wait a moment and restart the app. An Error 500 or 503 means a temporary problem on Bumble's side, so try again later.

Check whether the match is the problem

Before you blame the app, look at the match itself. A Bumble match expires if nobody sends a message within 72 hours, and an expired match shows a grey circle around the photo instead of a yellow one. If the chat you cannot write in is a grey-circled one, the cause is the expiry, not your phone. Extend gives a match another 72 hours.

If one chat is stuck while the rest work, that points to the match. If every chat is stuck, that points to the connection or the app. It is a quick way to save yourself ten minutes of restarts.

Do not lose the message

Write your message in your phone's notes app first, then paste it in. If the app crashes while you type, you keep the text.

Do not send the same message several times because it appears to hang. Bumble does not show read receipts or online status in chats, so you cannot tell whether she saw it, and a woman who receives three copies of one line reads a man who is flustered. Wait for the message to send, check the chat once, and then send one clean follow-up if you must.

Make the message worth the trouble

A message that fails to send is annoying. A message that sends and says nothing is worse.

a dating coach, who has coached men on online dating for about twenty years, tells men to keep first messages efficient. Notice one thing on her page, put it in a plain sentence with a question, and send it within a minute or so. He has picked apart Bumble conversations where a woman wrote first and the man answered with a bare "not much" and a line about her smile. Give her something specific to answer instead.

If the app is down for a day, do not binge when it returns. My advice is that half an hour a day does more than five hours in one go. Open your chats first, write to the newest matches while the 72 hours are still running, and leave the swiping for later.

If nothing works

If you have gone through the list and a known issue is not the cause, contact Bumble support and describe what happens, with a screenshot, your phone model and the steps you tried. In the meantime, move the conversation along a different way when she has given you her number, and keep your daily habit going on another app so a bad week costs you less.
