Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid and Bumble all let you message without paying. On every one of them, the paid tiers sell reach and visibility, not the right to write to a match. So messaging is free on all four, and the real limit is the free versions' cap on how many likes you can send in a day.

The four apps side by side

AppMessaging for free? How a chat opensWhere the free version limits you
TinderYes. You can match, chat and connect with no payment. After a mutual matchLikes you can send in a day
HingeYes. The regular version is free. After a match, either person can write firstLikes you can send in a day
OkCupidYes. It says messaging is completely free.Once two people Like each other, either can write from the messaging pageLikes you can send in a day
BumbleYes. The core experience works without paying. An opening message system that lets both people send one before the chat opensLikes you can send in a day

Each of those statements comes from the app's own help pages, and the paid tiers on all four add things such as visibility and reach.

What "free" means in practice

Free messaging means nobody charges you to type to a woman you have matched with. It does not mean you will get matches in unlimited numbers.

The free versions limit how many likes you can send in a day. That is where most men feel the squeeze. A man with a handful of likes left cannot afford to waste them, and one who spends them on women he has no real interest in ends the evening with nothing to write to.

So the order of effort is: choose your likes carefully, get matches, then write. The writing is free. The likes are the scarce part.

What the paid tiers actually add

On these apps, the paid tiers add reach and visibility features. They are not the price of being allowed to write.

That is worth knowing, because the upgrade screens can make it look otherwise. If a prompt suggests you need to pay to write to someone you have already matched with, read it again. What it is selling is almost always more exposure, more likes or a look at who has already liked you.

a dating coach says paying for a dating site is probably worth it in most cases, as long as the price is sane, because paying members are shown to more people. But he is clear that it multiplies what your page earns. A man with weak photos gets nothing from paying that fixing the photos would not have given him cheaper.

Which one to try first

Pick the one where the women you want to meet already are. A free app with no women near you is no use, however free it is.

If you are new, start with one open app and give it two weeks of real effort. Count conversations started, plans made and dates held. Then add a second app if the first is working. Two is enough. Seven apps means seven inboxes you answer slowly.

Use the free likes well

Since likes are the limit, spend them like money.

Look at each woman's photos properly before you tap. a dating coach warns against swiping right on everyone, because the app reads how picky you are, and a man who likes every face looks less attractive to its sorting. Choosing carefully both saves your daily allowance and tells the app what you want.

Aim for fewer, better likes on women you would genuinely like to meet. A match you want is worth more than five you do not.

Make the free messages count

Because writing is free, many men write badly. They send "hey" and a smiley and wonder why nothing happens.

Write one line about something specific in her photos or answers, and end it with something easy to answer. Then move toward a plan. coach teaches a short run of about four to seven texts that ends with agreed plans and a swapped number.

Do not spend three weeks building a pen pal. Women on these apps are talking to other men at the same time, and the one who asks first gets the date.

When to pay anyway

Pay only after your free setup is working. If you are getting matches and conversations, a paid tier that shows you to more people may help. If you are not, fix the page first.

A coach can read your photos and your first messages and tell you whether the next step is a paid tier or a better page.
