Hinge, Plenty of Fish, Coffee Meets Bagel and Match all remove or raise their limits on paid tiers, much as Tinder's paid plans do. We found no app that promises unlimited likes on a free account for good, and free caps change often, so check the screen before you sign up. For most men, being picky about whom they like matters more than having no limit.

The apps that lift the cap

Caps and tier names change, so treat this as a map and read the app on the day you decide.

Tinder. Its own subscription page lists unlimited likes with Tinder Plus, and Gold and Platinum include everything in Plus. A free account is limited, but Tinder does not publish the number. If you are leaving Tinder because of the limit, you will find the same trade elsewhere.

Hinge. Hinge+ adds unlimited likes and unlimited Undo Skips. It also shows all your incoming likes on one screen and adds extra preferences such as height, politics and drinking. Free members can send likes, but the number is limited.

Plenty of Fish. Its free account covers search, swiping and messaging your matches. In general terms, the paid tiers, Plus, Premium and Prestige, add things such as unlimited likes and read receipts. What each includes changes, so read the screen when you buy.

Coffee Meets Bagel. This one works differently, since the app hands you a daily batch of people instead of a stack. Its help pages say free users get a number of daily Bagels set by the algorithm, while Premium members have no daily limit as long as there are Bagels left to show.

Match. On Match you can search for women and write to one without waiting for a mutual swipe. Its paid tiers add unlimited search and filters, seeing who likes you, read receipts and boosts. a dating coach says it used to be the biggest app and now holds a smaller share of the women most men want to meet.

Why unlimited usually is not the goal

A man who hits a cap and feels blocked is often not running out of women he wants. He is running out of swipes he spent without thinking.

a dating coach's rule on likes is short: skip any woman you are not interested in. In his experience, an app treats a man who passes on most profiles as selective and may show him more attractive women in return. A man who likes everyone tells the app he will accept anything. An uncapped account only lets you send that signal faster.

When removing the cap is worth it

There is one kind of man for whom an uncapped account pays off: the one who runs out while still being choosy. That is usually someone in a big city, where there really are more women he would like than a free account allows.

a dating coach thinks that being able to choose whom you write to, instead of waiting for the algorithm to choose for you, is a feature worth paying for in almost every case. The reason is that apps can filter you out before a woman ever sees you, for example if she sets her age range below yours. A site where you can search and write directly gets around that.

His caveat matters as much. Most paid features are multipliers, and a multiplier on zero is still zero. Make sure the free version gives you at least a few matches before you pay.

Read the screen on the day you sign up

The details of a cap change without notice. An app can raise a free limit, lower it, or move a feature from one tier to another. So open the app you are considering, look at what the free account shows and what the paid screen lists, and decide from that. A comparison written last month, including this one, is a starting point.

A way to test it cheaply

Run the free version for two weeks and write down how many women you liked, how many matched, how many replied and how many agreed to meet.

Then pay for the shortest plan you can, use the app the same way, and count again. If your matches and your real conversations both rose, keep it. If only the like count rose, you bought volume and not results. Put a reminder in your phone before the plan renews.

What to do instead of chasing no limit

If you hit the cap and you are choosy, call it a day. Go back through the matches already waiting and write to the ones you never messaged. A woman who has already matched with you is a better bet than one more stranger.

Then check what a woman sees when your card comes up. A clear lead photo, a few specific lines, and a first message about something on her page will do more for your results than any amount of extra likes. Unlimited likes on a weak page just give more women the chance to scroll past it.
