Tinder is the closest in feel, Bumble is the closest in family, and Match.com is the closest to Badoo's habit of letting you look around and write first. Which one is best for you depends on which part of Badoo you liked. Badoo's loop is simple: one woman at a time in Encounters, a heart or a cross, and a chat once you both say yes. Most big dating apps copy that loop, so the useful question is which extra you want.
What Badoo actually does
Badoo has five things worth separating, because each points at a different alternative.
- Encounters shows one person at a time and asks for a heart or a cross.
- Discover lets you browse and open a page before you decide.
- With verification and Credits, you can start a chat without a match.
- Premium shows who liked you.
- Photo verification gives a blue checkmark.
Which alternative does which part
| What you liked about Badoo | Closest app | How it does it |
|---|---|---|
| The one-at-a-time vote | Tinder | A mutual like makes the match, and then the chat opens |
| Same company, same style | Bumble | Bumble Inc. runs both apps; Bumble is built so the woman makes the first move |
| Browsing and writing first | Match.com | A paying member can search for women and write to one directly |
| Seeing who already liked you | Hinge | Likes land in a tab where you accept or pass |
| Personality over photos | OkCupid | Answers to its questions produce a visible Match % |
Tinder
Tinder is the nearest in how it feels day to day. Both ask for a fast yes or no on one person and open a chat only after two yeses. The same warning holds on both. a dating coach believes an app treats a man who likes nearly everyone as less attractive, so a few careful likes beat a hundred careless ones.
Bumble
Bumble is a sibling of Badoo under Bumble Inc., and the company's filing calls it one of the first dating apps built with women at the center, where women make the first move. For a man, that means less writing first and more waiting. If you disliked the junk in a Badoo inbox, that trade may suit you.
Match.com
Match is the nearest to Badoo's chat-before-match shortcut. A paying member can search for women and write to one directly, and coach calls that one of its real advantages, because software cannot screen you out on age or height before she sees you. The cost is size: coach says Match no longer has the number of attractive women it once did, so it works as a second app, not your main one.
Hinge and OkCupid
Hinge is for the man who liked seeing who had already liked him. A like arrives in a tab, and you accept or pass. coach says most of his Hinge matches start with a woman liking him first, so a strong page does much of the work.
OkCupid is for the man who wants more than a photo to go on. It sets her answers against yours and shows a Match %. coach likes its matching, and it rewards honest answers.
What none of them change
Whichever app you move to, three things decide your results. One is a lead photo that shows your face clearly. Another is a handful of likes spent on women you would genuinely like to meet. The last is an opening line about one specific thing on her page. a dating coach's rule is that photos do most of the work on every app, and that a woman judges a man by his worst photo.
So moving apps to escape a weak photo set only moves the problem. Fix the set first, then compare apps.
How to pick
Start with your city. Badoo's strength, according to Bumble Inc.'s own filing, is in parts of Europe and Latin America, and every app is busier in some places than others. Open two apps, look at the first twenty women each shows you, and see which looks alive.
Then run the test coach gives for any app. Use it for two weeks in short daily sessions with your best photos. Count the women you liked, the conversations that started and the dates you set. Keep the one that gives you dates and drop the rest.
