Send one short, light follow-up after a few days of silence. If she does not answer it, stop, and give your attention to the matches who are replying. A Hinge match who goes quiet after a good chat has rarely rejected you in any dramatic way. She got busy, forgot to reply, or lost interest, and one easy message costs you nothing.

Work out which kind of silence it is

Not every silence is the same, and what you send depends on where the conversation stood.

If you were only trading messages, she owes you very little. A chat is not a commitment, and a few days of quiet is common. If you had agreed on a day and a place, the silence matters more, because a plan is on the line. And if you have already been on a date, a fair message afterward is reasonable.

Decide which of those you are in before you type anything. Most of the bad texts men send come from treating the first kind as if it were the third.

If you had plans, follow up once before the time

a dating coach tells a story that shows this well. He had a date nearly set with a woman who had been fun to talk to. She went quiet right as the day arrived, and he made one more text as the hour got close.

His reasoning is useful. Messages do get buried, and she may have meant to answer and forgot. Some women also need a second reminder before they commit. A man who says nothing and lets the hour pass looks like he does not care, and he also gives up whatever chance remained of making the date that night. One light text before the time costs you nothing.

If she still says nothing and the time passes, that is the end of it. Do not send a third message to ask where she was.

If it was only chat, wait, then send one line

When there were no plans, give it a few days. Then send one message that is easy to answer, such as a quick question about something she mentioned or a short, friendly line that picks up where you left off. Make it light. You are opening a door, not asking her to explain herself.

If she answers, carry on as if nothing happened, because nothing did. If she does not, you have your answer, and you lost almost nothing finding it out.

What not to send

The worst move is to act hurt. A message about her bad manners, or one that points out how long she has been quiet, feels like a complaint, and it turns a cooling match into a closed door.

coach points out that you can be completely right and still lose. If you tell her she owes you a reply, she will only decide she was right to disappear. She does not owe you anything yet, and she is a stranger who has had a few chats with you.

Skip the "did I do something wrong?" text, and skip the string of "hello?" messages. More messages do not make her like you. They make her feel pressure.

Do not take it as a verdict

It is easy to read a ghost as a judgment on you. It is usually much less personal than that. People are on several apps at once, and a woman with a lot of matches lets most conversations fade. Silence is the cheapest way for her to end one.

That does not mean your messages cannot improve. If the same thing keeps happening at the same point in your chats, read what you were sending when she faded. But one ghost on its own tells you very little.

Keep your other conversations alive

The best protection against one ghost is having several conversations going. A man with a single match to chase puts all his hopes in that one reply. A man with five live chats shrugs when one goes quiet and gets on with it.

That is a numbers game, and it works in your favor once you accept it. Write good first messages to new matches each week, and the ghosts lose their sting.

Make the silence less likely in the first place

My rule of thumb is to move a conversation off the app in about four to seven texts. The longer you chat inside the app, the easier it is for her to drift away.

He also likes to have a phone call before a date. In his experience the flake rate drops a lot, and the woman usually arrives more excited to see you. A call turns a name on a screen into a voice, and a voice is much harder to ignore. So aim for a plan, a number and a short call early, while the chat still has energy.
