What Do You Do About a Double Charge From Tinder?

Take it to whichever company billed you. Tinder says an iPhone purchase goes to Apple Support, because Apple manages those transactions directly, refunds included. An order number starting with GPA goes to Google Play Support. An order starting with TNDR or COSU, or a purchase made on Tinder.com, is a billing issue you report to Tinder.

Before you report anything, put the two charges side by side. A few ordinary situations look like being billed twice.

• A plan on each phone. Tinder says subscriptions do not transfer between platforms. A man who moved from an iPhone to an Android phone, and bought the plan again without cancelling the old one, has two live plans. Apple bills one and Google bills the other, and each is charging correctly for its own.
• A plan plus an extra. A subscription renewal and a Boost bought in the same week show up as two Tinder charges. Tinder's order numbers even separate them: TNDR marks a subscription and COSU marks a consumable.
• A renewal you forgot about. A plan you meant to cancel renews automatically until it is cancelled. Buy a plan on top of it and you have two charges.

If the two charges are for the same amount, on the same day, from the same company, with no second plan anywhere, that looks like a genuine duplicate.

Tinder's help page routes the complaint by where the purchase was made.

1. Bought in the app on an iPhone. Contact Apple Support. Tinder says Apple manages all these transactions directly, including refunds.
2. Order number starts with GPA. Google Play processed it. Contact Google Play Support.
3. Order number starts with TNDR or COSU. Report the billing issue or request a refund with Tinder.
4. Bought on Tinder.com. Report the billing issue to Tinder.

If your two charges came from two different places, you have two requests to make, one with each company.

Keep the message short. Include the order numbers for both charges, the dates and the amounts. Then say in one sentence what you think happened.

A screenshot helps too. Capture both charges as they appear on your statement or in your store's purchase history, so whoever reads the request can see the problem without asking you for more.

If you are writing to Tinder, send it from the email address you used for the purchase. Tinder asks for that email and the order number on refund requests, and a message with both is easy to match to your account.

Then deal with the cause, not only the charge. If you have a plan with each store, cancel the one you do not use. A refund on this month does nothing if both plans renew again next month.

Disputing the charge with your bank feels quicker. With Tinder it carries a real cost.

Tinder's Terms of Use say that if you start a chargeback or otherwise reverse a payment, Tinder may terminate your account immediately. You could win back one charge and lose the account, with every match and conversation in it. Go through the route above first.

Once it is sorted, set things up so it cannot happen again. Keep one plan, bought on the phone you actually use. Put its renewal date in your calendar. If you change phones, cancel on the old one before you buy on the new one.

That covers most of it. Two of the three cases above come from a plan still running somewhere you had stopped thinking about.

Paying twice stings partly because you were never sure the first payment was worth it. So make the one plan count where it matters most, which is turning conversations into dates.

A paid tier mostly helps at the front, with how many women see you and who you get to see. It does nothing for what happens after the match. That part is free, and it is entirely yours.

Ice White, who wrote The Message Game, has shown Tinder conversations where he had a woman's number within two or three messages. You do not need to move that fast. But a good conversation left sitting on the app for a week tends to fade. When she is replying with interest, suggest a drink or ask for her number. That is what turns a monthly charge into actual dates.
