Hinge says some of the most popular write-ins are friendly competition like pool, board games, escape rooms and pickleball, and outdoor plans like beach days, stargazing and bike rides. Creative picks like bookstores, pottery and art galleries are popular too. So are events like comedy shows, concerts and sports games.
The four groups Hinge names
Date Ideas lets you show a few first-date activities you would enjoy. Next to Hinge's own options, you can write in your own, and Hinge has shared which write-ins people use most.
Friendly competition. Pool, board games, escape rooms and pickleball.
Outdoor plans. Beach days, stargazing and bike rides.
Creative picks. Bookstores, pottery and art galleries.
Events. Comedy shows, concerts and sports games.
A write-in is your chance to name something more specific than a stock option. People use it to describe the kind of afternoon or evening they actually enjoy, and the list shows what that tends to look like.
What these ideas have in common
Look at the list and a few things jump out.
They give you something to do. Pool, pottery or a bike ride puts you side by side with something in your hands. That takes the pressure off two strangers staring at each other across a table.
They are cheap and easy to say yes to. None of them needs a reservation weeks out or a big budget.
They show a life. "Stargazing" or "comedy show" tells her more about your weekends than "drinks" ever could.
That is also why they work on the apps. A specific activity gives her something concrete to picture, and a reason to pick you over the man offering coffee.
Writing your own
Popular is a starting point, not a script. The best write-in is something you would genuinely enjoy doing with her next week.
Be specific. "Board games" is fine. "Losing to you at Scrabble in a café with good pastries" gives her a place, a mood and a small joke. A few words of detail go a long way.
Keep it short and easy to set up. A first meeting should be simple to arrange and simple to end. A couple of hours of pool fits. A full day at a theme park does not.
Think about where you live, too. A beach day is a great idea in a coastal city and a strange one three hours from the sea. Pick things the two of you could actually do without a long trip.
Mix your ideas. One active, one relaxed and one a bit unusual gives her a choice that suits her mood.
Ideas that work against you
Some write-ins send the wrong signal.
Anything expensive or elaborate, like a tasting menu, reads as trying to impress. It also raises the stakes on what should be a relaxed first meeting.
Anything that stops you talking, like a movie, wastes the one thing a first date is for, which is finding out whether you enjoy each other's company.
And anything that hints at how you hope the night ends will make a lot of women quietly pass. Save the flirting for when you are actually in the same room.
When she has a write-in on her page
Read her write-ins as a gift. She has told you something she wants to do.
If one of her ideas appeals to you, say so specifically when you like her. "Escape room was on your list. I suspect you're the one who solves it while everyone else panics." That gives her a reason to reply and shows you actually read her page.
If none of her ideas are your thing, do not pretend. Pick something else on her page to comment on instead. A date built around an activity you secretly hate starts you off on the wrong foot.
Turning an idea into an actual plan
A Date Idea on either page starts the plan. It does not make it for you.
Once you match, move from the idea to a day and a place within a few messages. "Pool at the place on Fifth, Thursday around seven?" is easy to answer. Waiting for her to organize it is how good ideas quietly die in the chat.
The write-ins people pick most are popular for a reason. They are easy, cheap and fun. Choose ones that fit your life, name them clearly, and then follow through.
