Tinder shows you a stream of cards that its recommendations have chosen, and you swipe. Match lets you set preferences, work through Recommended profiles and Top Picks, and in select markets search by typing what you want. Our view: pick Tinder if your photos are strong and you like a fast stream of choices, and pick Match if you would rather set what you are looking for and search. Both can be used free for matching and chatting once matched, and each sells paid tiers. a dating coach's view is that Tinder is photo-led and a boring page gets average results, while on Match a man can look for women on his own terms where swipe apps choose for him.
How each one starts
Tinder puts a stream of cards in front of you, and its recommendations choose the cards. You Swipe Right to Like a woman, and it is a Match if she Likes you back. The chat is for matched users: Tinder says only people with a mutual interest in each other may chat, and its FAQ puts messaging before a match in Platinum.
Tinder says its recommendations use location, age, distance and preferences. They also use interests, anonymized cues from photos, and your Likes and Nopes. It adds that being active on the app is the most important thing a user controls, because it prioritizes people who are active at the same time.
Match starts from what you tell it you want. It builds a Recommended set out of members near you, using your preferences and your activity. It also builds Top Picks around preferences like faith, education, smoking, drinking and whether she has or wants kids. On each one you tap a heart to Like or an X to pass.
What free covers on each
Tinder's help page says the app is free on the App Store and Google Play or at Tinder.com, and the free version lets you match, chat and connect.
On Match, per its help center, a free member can chat with every match. He also gets a daily allowance of Recommended profiles to rate and curated member profiles to explore. After a match, the two of you message each other directly.
So on both, a man can start without paying. The paid layer is about more control and more visibility, not about being allowed to talk.
What the paid tiers add
Tinder's tiers are Plus, Gold and Platinum. Match's are Bronze, Silver, Platinum and Diamond.
Match notes that its packages can differ by location. The line that matters most to a free member is about preferences: setting most of them, and marking any as a Must Have, takes a subscription. That is the practical edge of Match's free membership: you can look, but the strict filtering sits behind a subscription. Match's Platinum tier adds Unlimited Search.

Which man each one suits
Our view: Tinder suits a man who has good photos, enjoys a fast stream of choices and does not mind that the app picks the order. a dating coach says a boring, average page gets the average result there, so it rewards a man who has done the photo work.
Match suits a man who knows what he wants in a woman and would rather set preferences and search than react to a stack.
Hinge vs Match
On Hinge, a man reaches a woman by liking a specific prompt or photo, and the match needs her acceptance. Hinge says a match happens when someone accepts the Like or Rose you sent from Discover or Standouts, or when you accept a like from your Likes You tab. So a Hinge like is not yet a match. It becomes one when the other person accepts it.
The clearest difference from Match is search. Hinge's own help page says Hinge does not offer a search option to search for specific people. Match, as described above, works from the preferences you set and adds Unlimited Search on a paid tier.
Bumble vs Match
On Bumble, a match expires if nobody writes in time, and each of you sends an opening message before the chat fully opens. A Note counts as an opening message, and a bare hi may draw a gentle suggestion to make it more personal. Match's help pages state no expiry on a match, so the free chat described above has no stated clock on it.
Bumble gives everyone a free Extend each day to give a match more time. Bumble says its paid tiers, Boost, Premium and Premium+, are optional and that the app works well without them.
The test for any paid feature
a dating coach's test for a paid tier is the same on every one of these apps. Give it a short trial, check whether more came back, and let it go if not. His reason is that paying multiplies what an account already gets, and almost nothing multiplied is still almost nothing.
His biggest point is not about picking a site at all. It is about how you write your profile: write it like a man who wants a hookup and that is what you get, and write that you want something long-term and you get that. Our view is that the photos matter in the same way. Whichever one you try, give it the same set of photos and the same written answers, and judge it on what comes back.
