It can be, for an older man who lives where enough women his age are active on it. Zoosk is a general dating service, not one built for a particular age group, and we know of no breakdown of its members by age. So the honest answer is local: how many matches you get depends on how many active women live near you. Joining and browsing are free, so you can find out for a week at no cost before you pay for anything.
What Zoosk offers an older man
Zoosk is a long-running dating site and app, with one account across web, iOS and Android. It suggests members from your answers and activity, and it says the suggestions improve the more you use it.
You meet people three ways. SmartPick is a daily set of recommended members, and you answer each with a heart or an X. Your votes are private, and if you both choose a heart, Zoosk tells you both. Carousel shows one member's photo and age at a time, and a mutual Like becomes a Connection. Search lets you use filters and look when you know what you want.
For an older man the website version is a real plus. A larger screen and a keyboard make a detailed page and a considered message easier than on a phone.
What the algorithm does not tell you
Zoosk does not tell you how many members are in your age range or your town, and a forum post quoting a share is a guess. The number that matters is how many women you would honestly like to meet who used the service this week.
You set your own age range. Zoosk does not sort by age for you, so pick the range of women you would really enjoy meeting. Carousel may show members just outside your filters, which can surface a woman a strict search would have hidden.
Check for signs of life
Any service that has run for a long time collects members who stopped logging in. They make it look bigger than it is, and from your side they look like fakes, because nobody answers.
Look for recent photos, recent updates and replies that come within a day or two. If most of what you see looks stale, the pool is smaller than the count suggests. a dating coach does not treat an app as one fixed choice. He tests more than one and keeps the one where women near him are active.
Photos and manner at an older age
My advice for older men starts from this: you have gained value with age, in experience, judgment and understanding of women, and the work is to let her see it. He describes two kinds of older man. One is worldly and has his life together. The other has simply gotten older.
Use recent pictures in daylight, with your face clear and clothes that fit. Skip anything ten years old, because she meets the man in the photo and then the man at the table. Dress as a sophisticated man of your age, not as a teenager. Add one picture of you doing something you actually do, such as cooking, fishing, a trip or a Saturday project.
Your tastes may not have aged as fast as you have, so an age gap may come up. His advice is not to raise it yourself. Let her get to know you first, and let the number become a topic after she likes you.
What is free and what is not
Zoosk is free to join and browse, and tools like SmartPick and Carousel cost nothing. Sending messages and chatting needs a paid Zoosk+ membership.
So spend the free time learning who is on the service near you. A Like with no message goes nowhere, and a membership only earns its place if you are ready to write to several women in a short window. Start paying in a week when you will really send messages, not on a Sunday night before a busy fortnight.
Other dating apps and sites for an older man
Zoosk is not the only choice. SilverSingles describes itself as a dating site for singles over 50. eHarmony moves slower and asks you to complete a long quiz, which suits a man who wants something serious. Hinge, Bumble and Tinder are open to every age.
Test two and compare. Each has its own mix of people and its own way of choosing who sees you.
A one-week test, then a decision
Fix the photos first, then use Zoosk for a week and count four things: women you would take out, replies to anything you sent, conversations that lasted past a few lines, and dates set.
Few women you would meet means the pool is thin near you. Plenty of women but no replies means look at your photos and first lines. Write messages that pick up one thing from her page, keep them short, and suggest a coffee or a drink once she answers well. Chats that stay on a service fade, and an older man who asks plainly gives her something simple to say yes to.
Keep early dates in public places, tell a friend where you are, and never send money to anyone you have not met.
