Carousel shows you one member at a time, with a photo and an age. You tap Like if you are interested, or Pass to see the next one. If she Likes you back, you have a Mutual Match, she becomes one of your Connections, and the two of you appear in each other's Chat page.

What you see and what you do

The screen gives you almost nothing to read. One photo, one age, two choices.

A Like tells her you are interested, because Zoosk notifies her. A Pass just moves you along to the next member. There is no step in between where you read about her first, so every decision in Carousel is a decision about a photograph.

That works in both directions. When a woman is looking at you in her own Carousel, she has your photo and your age and nothing else. Your lead photo is doing all of the selling.

What happens when you both Like

When two members Like each other through Carousel, Zoosk creates a Mutual Match. The member joins your Connections, and the connection shows up on your Chat page.

This is the part worth being clear about. Carousel itself is open to every member. Sending messages and using chat needs a paid Zoosk+ membership. So a free account can find a Mutual Match and still not be able to write to her. If you plan to pay, plan the paid stretch around the moment you have several Connections waiting, not before.

Why some members do not fit your filters

Carousel does not always follow your filters to the letter. Zoosk designed it to show a wider variety of people, including members who fall just outside your preferences.

For a man, that cuts both ways. It can put in front of you a woman a strict search would have hidden, and she may be exactly your type. It can also show you a woman who lives too far away to meet. Decide before you start tapping which of those you care about. If a first date has to be easy to arrange, a Like on someone far from you is a Like you will not use.

Crushes and Undos

Zoosk sells something called Instant Crush and Undo as a separate purchase. Free members and Zoosk+ members can both buy it.

A Crush is a stronger signal than a Like, and you get a limited number each day. An Undo lets you go back to a member you passed on. The Undo is mostly for a slip of the thumb. The Crush is for the few women you would genuinely be glad to hear back from.

Neither one fixes a weak photo. a dating coach, who has spent years on dating apps, says women swipe left almost by reflex on photos that do not stand out. A stronger signal sent with an ordinary photo is a louder version of an answer she has already given. He also treats a small amount of money as a fair trade for time. The order matters, though. Get the photo working, then decide what to buy.

Zoosk gives you three ways to meet people, and they feel different. Carousel shows one member at a time and asks for a quick yes or no. SmartPick gives you a daily selection that Zoosk chose for you, and you answer with a heart or an X. Explore, on the Search page, shows several members at once in squares.

Carousel is the fastest of the three and the shallowest. It suits a man who wants to clear a lot of faces in a short sitting. If you would rather think about each woman, Explore shows more at once, and SmartPick does the choosing for you.

Be choosy, and mean your Likes. A man who Likes every face ends up with a long list of Connections he cannot tell apart, and he forgets who said what.

Write to a Connection while the interest is fresh. My method for getting a woman from an app to a real plan is short and simple. It usually takes four to seven messages, and each one has a purpose. He wants her to feel attraction, comfort and a reason to commit to meeting before he asks. A Mutual Match gives you a head start on the first of those, since she has already said yes to your photo.

Do not let the Connection sit. A woman who Liked you on Monday and heard nothing by Friday has moved on to someone else's Connections.

A photo and an age are a thin basis for a decision. A Mutual Match means two people liked each other's pictures. Nothing more.

Before you write, read whatever else Zoosk shows about her and use one specific detail in your first line. Then move toward a plan within a handful of messages. Carousel gets you the introduction. The messages are what turn it into a date.
