Yes, eHarmony is free to join, and the free Basic membership does more than most men expect. You get unlimited partner suggestions. You can send and receive Smiles, Icebreakers and Greetings, respond to a first message, and browse anonymously. What you pay for is Premium, which is sold in multi-month plans. It adds unlimited messaging and enhanced search, and it lets you see the photos of all your suggested partners.
What Basic gets you
The free membership is a real way to use the site, not just a trial screen. On Basic you can:
- Receive unlimited partner suggestions.
- Send and receive Smiles, Icebreakers and Greetings.
- Respond to a first message someone sends you.
- Browse anonymously.
That is enough to find out what eHarmony looks like where you live. You can see what kind of women it suggests to you, get a feel for the pace of the site, and decide whether it suits what you want before spending anything.
What Premium adds
Premium is where the site opens up. It adds three things:
- Unlimited messaging.
- Enhanced search.
- The photos of all your suggested partners.
Premium comes in multi-month plans, so paying is a commitment to use the site for a stretch of time. That is worth keeping in mind before you buy, and it is the reason the last section of this article matters.
The real limit of staying free
The limits of Basic fall in exactly the places that matter most to a man trying to get dates.
Without Premium you cannot see the photos of the women eHarmony suggests. You also cannot message freely. You can respond when a woman writes to you first, but that means your dating life depends on women starting every conversation.
Some women will. Waiting to be written to is still a thin plan, and a man who wants to meet someone soon usually needs to be the one who reaches out. For that, you need Premium.
Who paying is worth it for
A paid site has one real advantage over a free app. The people on it have put money down, which means they are actively looking and genuinely want to meet someone. You spend less time on women who downloaded an app out of boredom and more time on women who want the same thing you do.
eHarmony leans hard toward people looking for something serious. If that is you, and you are ready to take women out rather than chat for weeks, Premium puts you in a pool of people with the same intent.
If you only want to browse, or you are not sure you want anything serious, stay on Basic for now. There is no prize for paying early.
Get your page right before you pay
Paying for Premium does not make you more attractive. It shows more women your page and lets you write to more of them. If your photos are weak or your words are vague, paying just puts a weak page in front of more people, faster.
So use the free period to fix what you can. Put up a clear, recent photo of your face and a few that show how you actually live. Write a few specific lines about your life that sound like you talking, not like a job application. Then pay, with a page that has a real chance.
A sensible order to do things in
Most men sign up, see a paywall within minutes, and either pay on impulse or leave. Neither is the best use of the free membership.
A better order looks like this. Join free and answer the questions honestly, as yourself rather than as the man you think women want. Spend a week looking at the suggestions eHarmony sends you, so you know whether the site has the kind of women you want to meet where you live. Use that week to put up good photos and rewrite your page. Then decide.
If the suggestions look promising and your page is ready, pay and start writing. If the suggestions are thin, you have lost nothing but a little time.
Make the paid months count
Because Premium runs for months, the men who get the most out of it treat it like something they are using, not something they own.
Log in regularly. Write to women soon after they appear, while their interest in the site is fresh. Keep your first messages short and specific, with one playful comment about something on her page and an easy question she can answer.
Most of all, move conversations toward a date. Bring up a drink early, as a light idea, and ask for her number a few messages later. A Premium membership full of long, polite chats that never turn into plans is the most expensive way to use eHarmony. A few real dates are what the money is for.
