Send one short, friendly text that reminds her who you are, points to something real you shared, and gives her an easy way to answer. Skip the apology speech and the "hey stranger." Once she answers, move toward a plan, and with no answer, leave it alone. A good text after months of silence is light, brief and has no pressure attached.
First decide whether to text at all
Before you write anything, be honest about what happened between you.
If you had real chemistry, like a few dates or a long friendly chat where she was clearly enjoying herself, a message is reasonable. If you exchanged five messages and never met, there is not much to restart. Let that one go.
Also ask who went quiet. If you disappeared on her, a short and honest note makes sense. If she stopped answering you, one clean message is the most you should send, and you should accept it if nothing comes back.
Make sure she knows who you are
My first texting rule applies even more after a long gap: she has to know who you are. If you met her months ago and she never saved your number, a message from a stranger's number is easy to ignore.
So say your name, and add one detail that jogs her memory. "Hey, it's Dan, we talked about the terrible pizza at Mike's party" works much better than "Hey, it's me."
Keep it short and specific
You are opening a door, not catching up on the whole year. The message should have three parts:
- A reminder of who you are or a real moment you shared.
- A light, warm line that shows you thought of her.
- An easy way to reply.
A few examples that follow that shape:
"Hey, it's Dan from Mike's party. I walked past a pizza place today and thought of your rant about pineapple. How have you been?"
"Hi Sara, I saw that the film you recommended is finally on streaming. You were right about the ending. Hope you are doing well."
"It's been a while. I enjoyed talking with you back then and wanted to say hi. If you feel like a coffee sometime, let me know."
Each one is short, easy to answer, and honest. None of them asks her to explain herself.
What not to send
Some openers make things worse:
- "Hey stranger." It puts the blame on her for the silence.
- A long apology. If you ghosted her, one short line is enough. Three paragraphs make it about your guilt, and she has to comfort you.
- "Do you remember me?" It forces her to prove something.
- "I miss you." After months of no contact this lands as heavy and a bit dramatic.
- A paragraph about what you have been doing. She has not asked yet.
- A question that needs a long answer, like "so what have you been up to all these months?"
If you ended things badly, resist the urge to reopen the argument. Keep the message forward looking, even when you mention the past.
Give her an easy out
A good message makes it easy to say yes and easy to ignore. A line like "no worries if you are busy" removes pressure and makes you look like a man whose life does not depend on her answer.
That does not mean writing "no pressure!" in every sentence. One relaxed line at the end is plenty.
How to read her reply
If she answers with warmth, asks you a question back and says something about her own life, she is open. Reply within a few hours, keep it short, and move toward a plan within a few messages. Something like "I would like to hear more. Want to grab a coffee this week?" works.
If she answers with "haha hey" and nothing else, you can send one reply and see. If she gives another short answer with no question back, take the hint.
If she says she has someone or is not interested, thank her and stop. A graceful exit now means she may be glad to hear from you later.
When there is no answer
Do not send a second message to rescue the first. Wait. A late reply is possible, because people forget or get busy, but only one follow up is worth considering, and only after a long gap.
Silence after months of no contact is not a rejection of you as a person. It means the timing was off or she has moved on. Put your energy into people who are around now.
When it is better not to text
Skip the message if she is in a relationship, if she has told you she does not want contact, or if you are mostly sending it because you feel lonely. A message sent to ease your own mood tends to read that way.
If the honest reason is "I met someone amazing and I have been thinking about her since," tell her that in one calm sentence. If the honest reason is "I am bored," pick a different person to text.
