Reply with something short, light and easy to answer, like a tease or a silly question that she can respond to in a few words. Do not interview her and do not ignore the text. If the chat is warm, steer it toward a first date in small steps.

What her text can mean

Nobody can tell from one word. She might want a chat, company, or just something to do with her thumbs while a show buffers, and you do not have to decide which.

If she answers you quickly a few times, that is not proof she likes you either. A fast reply may just mean she is idle with her phone in hand. Treat the text as an open door, walk through it lightly, and let her next answer tell you more than your guessing can.

Make it easy to answer

Put yourself in her shoes and ask whether you could think of a reply to your own text. If you would stare at it, she will too.

My rule about making a text easy to answer is, as he puts it, a little more nuanced than some of his others, and a little hard to explain. A text she cannot easily answer is a problem, and so is one that only invites a yes or no. A tease she has to think about for a moment can still work when she knows what she is replying to, because a girl who gets invested in how to answer you is a good sign.

Compare two replies to "I'm so bored":

  • "Why?" makes her explain her evening before the chat has even started, and it reads like a survey.
  • "Bored? I'm shocked. Bold admission from someone who probably owns three half-finished puzzles." gives her something to deny, something to correct, and something to laugh at.

Lines that fit the shape

These are examples of the shape, so use your own joke about her. Each is a small tease or a silly premise, quick to take in at a glance.

  • "Dangerous. Last time someone was bored near me, they ended up learning to juggle."
  • "Okay, emergency. On a scale of laundry to skydiving, how bored are we talking?"
  • "That's a lot of power to hand me. Pick one: I tell you a terrible fact, or you tell me your worst talent."
  • A photo or meme that makes the same joke, with one short line under it. Emojis and pictures help a tease read as a joke instead of a jab.

One or two ideas is plenty. A wall of texts in reply to one bored line looks needy, and it takes away her turn.

Do not interrogate her

The tempting move is a string of questions: what are you doing, why are you bored, what do you usually do. My advice is to keep the tone informal and friendly and not to grill her with boring questions. She told you she is bored, and a quiz makes her more bored.

Ask one question at most, and make it a fun one, such as which of two silly options she would pick. The tease does the heavy lifting. The question just hands her the ball.

If she answers with real energy, match it for an exchange or two. A quick back-and-forth is fine when the chat is going well. You do not have to slow-walk every reply, but you should not answer in four seconds every single time either.

Turning it into a plan

My view is that texting should end up as a call or a date, so it is fine to steer that way. A bored text is a natural place to try it, because she may have a free stretch right now, though nobody can tell that from one word.

Do not open with one big specific ask like "drink tomorrow at 7". coach teaches small yeses first: a question about her, then agreement to the general idea of meeting, then the schedule. Here is how that sounds after a bored text:

  • You: "If you had a totally free evening, would you pick a new restaurant or a movie on the couch?" (a question about her)
  • Her: "New restaurant, always."
  • You: "Good answer. If I found a noodle place worth the trip, would you come along?" (agreeing to the idea)
  • Her: "Okay, I could get behind that."
  • You: "Which evening is usually easiest for you?" (the schedule)

You never asked for anything big, so she never had anything big to refuse.

A cool or vague reply

Sometimes the reply is vague, a single word, or nothing at all. Read that as not tonight, not as a problem to solve.

Do not escalate off a cool or negative reply. My warning is that pushing from a bad mood tends to get silence. Do not jump to anything sexual, do not repeat the invitation, and do not double text to chase her. Let it rest, and talk to her again later about something else when you have something good to say.

A dodge on the plan works the same way. If she keeps the banter going but slides past every attempt to meet, you do not need to work out why. Stay light and put your energy where the replies come with effort.

Keep it moving

coach closes with a warning: a chat that never moves toward plans can leave the two of you tired of texting each other. So skip the sympathy paragraph. A good reply to a bored text is playful for a moment and then heads somewhere real.
