On Match.com, you can tell someone read your message when it shows Read with a timestamp. If it shows Delivered, or Sent in the app, she has not opened it yet. Read receipts come with the Platinum and Diamond subscriptions and work once you are mutual matches. They cut both ways on the dating site, so a woman on either plan will know when you open her messages too.

Read, Delivered and Sent

There are only two states to learn.

Read, with a timestamp, means she opened your message. The time tells you when.

Delivered means it reached her but she has not opened it yet. In the app the same state says Sent. Either word means the same thing: it is still waiting for her.

Who gets read receipts

Read receipts are part of Platinum and Diamond. On any other plan you will not see the Read status on your own messages.

They also only work after a mutual match. Until you and she have matched, a message will not tell you whether she opened it.

So on a lower plan, or before a match, there is no status to check. Everything below still applies. Assume she will read your message at some point, and judge the conversation by whether she answers, not by whether she has looked.

They work in both directions

This part surprises men. If a woman has Platinum or Diamond, she will know when you open her messages.

So opening her message is now a small act she can see. Open it and then take a day to answer, and she may notice the gap. The simple fix is to open messages when you can actually reply, and to reply at a normal pace rather than playing games with the timing.

Never leave a woman on read on purpose to look busy or hard to get. On a plan with receipts she can see exactly what you did, and it reads as a game rather than a full life. If you are interested, answer. If you are not, a short, kind message ending it beats silence.

What a Read with no answer usually means

A Read with no reply feels like a verdict. It almost never is.

Most women on a dating site are juggling several conversations and a busy day. She may have opened your message on the train, meant to answer later, and forgotten. She may have liked you but not known what to say. She may be lukewarm and seeing how the week goes. Only one of those is a no, and a timestamp cannot tell you which.

That is why plenty of men would be happier without read receipts at all. Seeing that she read you and did not answer rarely helps you do anything. It mostly just stings. Look at it once, if at all, and then get on with your day.

Do not chase the first message

The worst reply to a Read is a second message that is really about the first one. Sending "Did you see my message?" or "Hello?" tells her you have been watching the screen. That reads as needy, and needy is hard to come back from.

A second message is fine when it stands on its own. The problem is the nervous follow-up, sent because the first one felt like it failed. If your first message was fine, let it be.

What to send instead

If a couple of days pass with no answer, you can send one fresh message. Make it light, make it new, and make it easy to answer.

A good follow-up picks up something new from her page, or shares a small, specific thing from your own week that fits what she wrote. It should read like a message you would send if the first one had never existed.

Say her page mentions she is training for a half marathon. A follow-up like "How did the long run go this weekend?" is new, specific and easy to answer. It does not mention the silence at all, and that is the point.

If that gets nothing either, move on. Put your energy into the women who are writing back.

Are read receipts worth paying for?

On their own, not really. Knowing she opened your message does not make her any more likely to answer it.

What gets answers is what you write. A short first message that mentions something specific from her page and ends with an easy question will do more for your replies than any status label. If you are already on Platinum or Diamond for other reasons, use the receipts lightly. If you are thinking of upgrading just for them, spend that effort on your messages first.

If you do have receipts, use them for one practical thing. They tell apart a message she never opened from one she opened and skipped. A Delivered that sits for a week means she is not on the site much, so a fresh message later is fair. A Read that sits for a week is a quiet answer, and your time is better spent on someone else.
