The men this happens to are not stupid. That is the first thing worth saying, because the shame around it is exactly what keeps it working.
What gets a sensible man is that the whole thing is pleasant. Nobody threatens you. Nobody asks for anything for weeks. You just get the nicest conversation you have had on a dating app in a year, and by the time there is an ask, you are not talking to a stranger any more. You are talking to her.
It runs in the same order every time
Strip away the story and there are only three moving parts, and they always arrive in this order.
First, warmth that shows up before it was earned. Second, a reason she can never be in the same room as you. Third, a problem that money would solve.
If you only remember one thing from this article, remember the order. Any one of those on its own can be innocent. All three, in that sequence, is not a coincidence.
Warmth that arrives too early
Real interest builds. It goes up and down. She is keen on Tuesday and quiet on Wednesday because she had a bad day at work.
A scam does not do that, because the person running it is working a queue and has no reason to hold back. So you get replies within seconds, at every hour. You get good morning and good night messages by the second day. You get "I have never been able to talk to anyone like this" from someone who has known you for a week.
Notice how little of it is actually about you. Compliments land on things she cannot know yet: that you are kind, that you are different, that she feels safe with you. She is not describing you. She is describing a feeling she wants you to have.
A reason she can never meet
This is the part that settles it, and it is the easiest to test.
The reasons are always sympathetic and always temporary. She works offshore. She is a nurse on a contract abroad. She is a soldier, an engineer on a rig, a buyer stuck overseas for three more weeks. The camera on her laptop broke. She hates video calls. Her signal is bad where she is.
Any one of those can be true for a real woman. What is not true for a real woman is all of them, one after another, each time you suggest something normal. A woman who wants to meet you will find a way to be in a room with you, or she will tell you plainly that she does not want to.
The problem money would fix
It never opens here. It arrives once you care.
A customs fee to release something. A flight home she cannot cover. A medical bill for a parent. A phone bill, so she can keep talking to you. An investment she is doing well on, and she would hate for you to miss it.
Two details give it away whatever the story is. The amount is small enough to feel silly to refuse, and the way it has to be sent is strange. Gift cards, crypto, a wire to a third person, an app you have never used. Nobody legitimate needs to be paid in gift cards. Nobody.
The two minute check
Before you feel anything, do the boring version of this.
Save one of her photos and run a reverse image search on it. Do the same with two more, because scammers often take one real woman's whole account. Search the text of her bio in quotes. Search her name with the city she gave you.
Then ask for one ordinary thing. A short video call, at a time that suits her. Not as a test, not announced as a test. Just "I would rather see your face than type, are you free later." A real woman says yes, or says she is shy and offers something else real. An account run by somebody else will produce a reason.
Why it works on men who should know better
Because refusing feels like an accusation. You have been talking every day for a month. To say no to forty pounds is to say that you think she has been lying the whole time, and most decent men would rather pay than say that out loud.
Then there is the money already sent. Once you have sent something, walking away means admitting the earlier bit was a loss too, so men send more to protect what they already gave. That is the same reason people stay in bad bets, and it has nothing to do with intelligence.
What to do if you are already in it
Stop sending money. Not less. None.
Do not confront her, because the argument is the thing she is best at and you will lose it. Do not send a final message explaining what you worked out. Block the account, report it in the app, and report it to your bank if money moved, quickly, because banks can sometimes stop a recent transfer.
Then ignore anyone who contacts you offering to recover the funds for a fee. That is the same trade, sold to you a second time.
And tell someone. The silence is what lets this run for months.
The version of this you can avoid entirely
Most of these never reach a man whose apps are being run properly, because the accounts show their shape early and get closed out before there is any feeling attached to them.
That is a real part of what our team does. We rebuild the photos and the profile, then run the apps and the conversations day to day, which means the sorting happens in the first few messages instead of in your head at midnight. The women who are real and who fit what you asked for are the ones who end up on your calendar. Your first date within a week, or we keep working.
What you stop doing is the hardest part of online dating to do well when you are lonely, which is deciding clearly about someone who is being very kind to you.
