The scammer matches with you on a dating app and gets you onto WhatsApp quickly. For days or weeks the scammer is warm and attentive. Then comes a problem or an opportunity that needs your money. The move to WhatsApp is the step that makes the rest possible, because the dating app's reporting and moderation stop at its own edge. Once you are on a private chat, nobody can see what is being said to you.
The order it runs in
The details change, but the sequence is steady.
- A match arrives that is unusually eager. She likes everything about you, and she writes quickly.
- Within a few messages she says she barely uses the app and asks for your WhatsApp number.
- The attention becomes constant. Morning messages, photos through the day, talk about the future.
- A reason appears why you cannot meet or see her live. She is traveling, working abroad, or between places.
- A need or an opportunity turns up, and it involves money.
By step five a man has often spent a week or two feeling that this is a real relationship. That is the point of the earlier steps.
What WhatsApp gives the scammer
WhatsApp ties a chat to a phone number, which makes it feel personal and safe. It also runs outside the dating app, so a report you file with the app does not follow the account there.
It lets an operator run many chats at once, copy messages from a script, and send links and screenshots easily. A woman who really prefers WhatsApp does not mind moving slowly. A scammer needs you there quickly, before you have noticed that nothing she has said refers to anything you wrote.
Why it works on sensible men
It is not a test of intelligence. The setup is built to feel like exactly what a lonely or hopeful man wants: a woman who answers at once, remembers what he said and seems pleased he exists. After a week of that, the money request arrives inside a relationship that already feels real, and refusing feels like abandoning her.
That is why the early signs matter more than the ask. By the time the ask comes, you have a week of feeling invested. Catch it in the first few messages, when it costs you nothing to walk away.
The money request
It comes in a few shapes, and the story around it is the part to watch.
- An investment she is already making. She mentions a relative or a friend who trades, shows you screenshots of profits, and invites you to try a platform with a small deposit. The money you put in seems to grow, and then you cannot take it out without paying a fee or adding more.
- An emergency. A stuck payment, a medical bill, a ticket she cannot buy, or a problem with her bank. The amount is small at first.
- A gift or a fee. A request for gift cards, a package, a visa, or a transfer fee.
None of these is a real part of getting to know someone. A woman who likes you does not need your money to keep talking.
The signs, early
Two or three together are enough to step back.
- She asks for WhatsApp before saying anything specific about your page.
- Her messages could have gone to any man. Nothing you wrote shows up in them.
- Her photos are all polished, and none looks casual or accidental.
- Her number has a country code that does not match where her page says she lives.
- She will not do a short live video call, and always has a reason.
- She talks about money, crypto, trading or gift cards, even in passing.
- She is in a hurry to call it love.
Urgency is the most reliable of them. A real person has no reason to rush you.
What to do
Answer the move with the ordinary alternative. Suggest a video call on the app, or a plan for a drink this week. Real women take that or say they would rather chat a little longer. A scammer repeats the request, ignores you, or fades away.
If you are already on WhatsApp, ask for a short live video call before anything else. If she dodges it, stop. Never send money, gift cards or crypto, and never share your ID or bank details.
If you have already paid, contact your bank at once, stop replying, and report the account to the dating app and to the fraud office in your country. Do not pay a recovery fee to anyone who contacts you afterward.
Real women use WhatsApp too
In many countries it is the default way to message, so a request to move there is not proof of anything. It is the speed of the request and the money that give it away. If you want a place to start with real women, aim at a plan rather than a platform.
