Ask for her number once the chat has a little warmth and a plan in sight, usually after a handful of exchanges and not after weeks. Suggest a specific thing to do, then trade numbers as part of agreeing to it. Then text her your name straight away so she can save it. The goal of the Hinge chat is to get out of the Hinge chat.
Why you want to leave the app
Hinge is a place to find a woman. It is a poor place to build a relationship with her. Her notifications are mixed in with every other chat, she may only open the app a few times a week, and a quiet day can end the whole conversation.
a dating coach describes a common story: you message a woman for days and even weeks. You never get her number and never make plans. Eventually her account goes inactive, or she says she sees you as a friend. His point is that if that has happened to you, you are doing something wrong, and so are most men. The fix is to treat the chat as a short bridge to a plan.
How long the chat should be
coach says that when he is moving a woman from the app to a plan, it takes about four to seven texts. They are not complicated. Every one has a purpose, and every one moves the conversation closer to the outcome.
That is a rough guide and not a law. If she is chatty and the banter is easy, you may be ready sooner. If she is slower, it takes longer. What matters is direction. Each message should do something: start the chat, make her laugh, learn something about her, suggest a plan, or settle the details.
A conversation that wanders for two weeks, with no plan on the table, is the one that dies.
When to ask
Ask when the exchange is going well. Signs include:
- She answers with more than a word
- She asks you something back
- She laughs or teases you
- You have found one thing you both like
Do not ask on the first message, and do not wait until the chat has gone flat. The best moment is a good back and forth, when the next step feels natural.
What to say
Make the number part of a plan, not a separate request. My example closes on an agreed plan, followed by an exchange of numbers. The structure is simple: you suggest something specific, she agrees, and you say something like "sounds good, my number is this, what's yours?"
For example: "There is a coffee place near you that does a ridiculous cinnamon thing. Thursday work for a quick one? I'll text you the details, what's your number?" It is easy to say yes to, because the plan comes with it.
In My example, the last message before the numbers change hands is two words: "challenge accepted." He says it carries attraction, comfort and commitment together. That is the kind of reply you are aiming to earn, not a line to copy.
What not to do
Do not ask for her number with no reason. "Can I get your number?" on its own sounds like a request for access, and she has no idea what you want to do with it. Do not turn it into a test or a game. And do not ask three times if she hesitates once.
If she says she would rather stay on the app a little longer, say "no problem" and keep the chat light for a few more messages. Pressure is the quickest way to end it.
The first text
Once you have her number, text her your name right away. My reason is that she may meet several men in a week, and if she gets a text from a number she does not know, she may not remember who you are. If she knows your name, she can save it, and she can look back at the Hinge chat to place you.
Keep the first text short and easy to answer. Mention something from your chat and point at the plan: "It's Mark from Hinge. Still thinking about the cinnamon thing. Thursday at six?" That beats "hey" every time.
Think about a call
coach also likes a phone call or video call before the first date. He finds that plans made only in text are much more likely to flake, and that when he has spoken with a woman first, she shows up more excited and the date feels to her like a second date.
You can propose it in the same breath as the number: "Let's do a quick call Wednesday night, and then we'll sort out Thursday." It also lets you hear whether the banter works, which saves you from a date that was only good on the screen.
If she goes quiet after you ask
Some women will go quiet after you ask. coach says it happens often, and the hotter the woman, the more likely it is. Do not take it as a verdict. Wait a day or two, send one short, friendly follow-up, and then spend your attention on other chats. A man with several conversations going is easy about one that stopped.
If you often get close and then lose the chat at the point where you ask for a plan, a coach can read it with you and show you what is going wrong.
