Make sure she knows who you are, keep every text short, answer at a normal pace, and move toward a date in small steps instead of one big ask. The point of texting is to get you to the next place where you can have real communication, which means a phone call or a date. Everything below shows how to do that from the first text to the plan, whether her number came from a conversation on the street or from an app.
What texting is for
Texting is the weakest tool you have. Her face and your voice are gone, and she is left with a few words on a screen. Texting is not the most efficient and best form of communication. In-person communication is the best, phone calls are the next best, texting is not the greatest. You're not going to try and express the meaning of life in text. You're not going to share all your deepest desires in text.
That changes how you judge a text. A good one is not the cleverest line you could write. It is the one that moves her a step closer to hearing your voice or sitting across from you. A woman who loves texting you and never meets you is a pen pal.
Every rule below is a principle, and a principle bends with the situation. Once you understand why something's low value or why it doesn't work, now you understand when to apply the rule and when to violate the rule, and that's what's really, really important.
Get a number worth texting
Good texting starts before the first text. All the text game in the world is very rarely going to turn a super flaky number that doesn't like you around. Three things make a number solid.
- Get her to qualify herself. If the girl doesn't make an effort to prove herself to you, or to prove that you and she might get along, or you and she making plans make sense, something along those lines, then you have no real reason to have wanted to get a number from her. In person, that means a question or two before you ask. On an app, it is the conversation before you ask for the number.
- Give the number a reason. If from the very beginning there's already the premise that the reason why you got the number was to set up a date, now all your texting along those lines becomes less needy. Talk about something you would both enjoy, then say the number is how you will set it up. A number taken with no reason behind it leads nowhere, because there's no intention and no premise behind the number.
- Get your name in her phone. You want to make sure that when you do text or call the girl later that it actually comes up with a name that she'll recognize as opposed to ten random digits.
Two extras help a lot. Stay a couple of minutes after you get it. You are no longer hitting on her, and that comfort carries over to how she pictures the date. And try and get a rough idea at least of what her schedule is. Then you know when she can answer, and you can ask for plans on a day she is free instead of hearing no on a day she is not.
Make sure she knows who you are
On a practical level this means get your name and number in her phone and as soon as possible. Even if she had a great interaction with you she may not remember your name. This does happen. She might have been drinking, she might have met other people that night. Especially if you just text and it comes up as a number, like hey what are you up to, you're getting blocked.
There are two good ways to do it. The best is to type your own name and number into her phone and have her text you from it, so she sees in the morning that she texted you first. The other is to get her number and just text your name right then and there so that she remembers it in the moment she can save it herself.
Your first real text can then be short and specific. Name the place or the moment you share, and give her one easy thing to answer.
"Marcus, the guy from the line at the taco truck. You owe me an answer on the hot sauce."
If the number came from an app, the same idea holds with a different anchor.
"It's Marcus, from the app. Easier to talk here. What did you end up doing with your Sunday?"
Send it the same day or the next, while she still remembers you. If you have a good callback joke, use it. If you don't, don't force one. If you're not super confident in your texting, it's often times better to just trust you had a good interaction and just put your name in there. Less can be more.
Keep texts short, informal and easy to answer
One or two ideas per text
When a girl sees a wall of text from you, when she looks at her phone and she sees that it's all one color on one side with no response, it looks incredibly needy, incredibly try hard, and honestly a little bit scary and creepy. I want one or two ideas at most. I don't want to be talking about like hey let's get together for plans, and also I did this thing last night, and also how's your sister, and also here's this funny call back joke. That's too convoluted. That's all over the place.
If you have a long text to send, sometimes just do it as a voice message, or sometimes if the time is right use it as an opportunity to pick up the phone and call.
Informal beats polished
Texting is an informal type of communication. It's not the type of thing you send to your boss or to the government. If the tone of your texting becomes too formal and businesslike it can look like you have an agenda, and it can also make the text a lot less fun to respond to and a lot less rewarding for the girl to respond to.
The content should be good, the message should be good, but it should appear that you didn't spend a lot of time typing. If she sends three questions, you do not owe her three tidy answers in order. Answer the one you like, add something of your own, and let the rest go. Photos, memes and emojis help too. A lot of times you may have a joke that's unclear whether it's a joke, and by sending a winky face or a smile you make it clear what you actually mean.
Give her something to answer
Don't interrogate the girl and just ask a bunch of boring lame questions. Try and keep it fun and upbeat, and add some of your own flare and flavor and teasing to the conversation if at all possible. Before you send anything, run one test: if I were the girl responding to this text, would I be able to come up with something?
A vague question fails the test. What's your story is kind of a tough question, it's just very vague. A narrow one passes it.
"If you could take a trip anywhere next month, where would you go?"
A tease can be a little hard to answer and still be good, because a girl getting invested and thinking about what to text you back is a good thing.
"If you can promise to be as much fun in person as you are in text, then the first glass of wine's on me."
The bad version leaves her nothing at all. Compare these two replies to a photo of her hike.
"Nice."
"Nice. Which part made you question your life choices?"
The second one is hardly longer, and it gives her a reason to type.
Reply at a normal pace
If you're responding right away every single time, you look like you're sitting by your phone waiting for her text, and that whenever her text comes in she's your number one priority in life. High value guys are usually busy doing lots of things. Oftentimes even if they do receive a text they're in the middle of something, they put it back in their pocket and figure they'll respond to it later.
Do not overcorrect, though. Some people give the advice wait as long as she waits. That's ridiculous. Also, that's very, very, very impractical. As long as you're between like an hour and a few hours, maybe half a day at most, to respond, that's a reasonable amount of time that a human being checks their phone periodically and gets back to people.
The simplest way to get there is to stop managing it. One of the best ways to be non-needy and come off as cool in texting is to just text when it's convenient for you. When you're going to send a girl a text, ask yourself, would I send this to a girl if I knew 100% she liked me? When you're busy, you'll get back to her later. You're not obsessed with it.
The pace changes with what is going on.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You are setting up a date for tonight | Reply fast. Long pauses can make her lose faith in the date |
| Casual back and forth, no plans yet | Reply when your phone is in your hand, even if that is a few hours |
| She took a day to answer | Do not answer in seconds. Give it a few hours |
| It is late and you will not see her tonight | Stop for the night and pick it up in the morning |
| You know she is asleep or at work | Wait until she can see it |
The first row has a reason. If you're setting a date with a girl for tonight and there's texting going back and forth about that date, you actually better respond relatively quickly. Giving long pauses there may actually cause her to lose faith in the date, may cause her to get frustrated.
So does the last one. Texting at 3:00 a.m. when you know she's asleep is wasted. If she receives the notification and can't respond, puts it in her pocket, she may actually forget to text you back. You receive silence, and now you're forced to double text or follow up or be needy when you otherwise wouldn't have had to.
How often matters as much as how fast. Between the number and a date that is a week away, I much prefer if I'm just messaging her every couple days or maybe daily at the most. I don't want to be messaging 16 times per day, at least not with me initiating. If she wants to text a lot, that's fine and I can be responsive to it to a certain degree.
Pass her tests and recover from a bad text
Pass the test, then move
When things are going well in text, you should be generally gradually moving things forward towards plans. When things are going badly, get them going well again first. If you get a test, just pass the test. If you get a negative, do not escalate.
Say she writes, "What makes you think you're so special?" Replying with an invitation to a drink so you can show her is too eager. You have to pass the test to build the social capital to earn going on the date. A short, light reply does that.
"Good taste in women. Evidence: this conversation."
Worse is escalating off a rejection. When the girl's in a bad mood or not feeling good about the situation, the last thing she wants to do is move it forward to something that's more committal and more risky. Get the conversation back on a good track before you go for plans.
Do not go backward on your own
If you are having a teasing, positive conversation, don't interject and ask about the weather. Don't voluntarily digress a good conversation to a bad conversation which is then going to have to build again. It also looks needier, because you now have to bring the plans up a second time.
Stay on ground you know
In one student's exchange, everything was positive and he had tentative plans. Then he joked about the death of the author she had picked for her paper. She came back angry, and every text after that was uphill.
Talk about subjects you know and where you lead, not the ones where she has the knowledge. It's possible to let her teach you, it's possible to show curiosity. But a joke about something she cares about, on a topic you barely know, is a risk with no payoff. Most women would be fine with it. It's just not a necessary risk to take.
Fix it without making it worse
If a text lands badly, you will want to explain, apologize and change the subject, all in the same minute. You shouldn't admit outright that you were wrong in terms of what you did. You should admit in these contexts that you were wrong in terms of not anticipating something, or that you didn't realize how it would be taken. Then show interest in her side.
"I had no idea that was a sore spot. You clearly know her work. Tell me what you love about it."
Changing the topic looks like exactly what it is, which is running away.
The same goes for small stuff. Do not ask whether she got your text or whether you offended her. Even if you think it was a bad text, don't bring it up. Be like lol obviously just kidding, and then the next thing, and just get past it. The exception is the hour before a set time. If you're about to leave and need an answer, say so, the way you would to a friend.
Texting should essentially be a reflection of good internal psychology, which is like psychology that she likes you, plans are inevitable, and the texting is just a fun formality.
Double texting
Is double texting wrong? Not necessarily. It depends how you do it. The problem with double texting can be appearing needy, appearing overly invested.
The bad version is the follow-up. If you text something a little risky, you don't get a response for 5 minutes, and then you text something else, it looks really needy. It looks like you hated your first text. As soon as you double text and try to correct it, you've pointed out to the world how bad your first text is.
Three kinds are fine. If you happen to just break a text into two parts and send one right after the other, that's a completely fine double text. If you text something that doesn't really require response and closes a conversational topic, and then you text something else the next day that opens a new one, that's fine. And when plans are in motion and a time limit is involved, a second text may be needed even though it is not optimal.
Silence is a tool as well. You do not have to respond to every text she sends at all, and you certainly do not have to respond right away. When there's no deadline on a text and nothing specific to be achieved by the next one, it's a decent idea to just wait.
If her number came from an app
Everything above applies, with three differences. If the girl's messaging a lot online, she's probably messaging not only you but other guys online. The app doesn't notify the same way a phone does, so you'll tend to get fewer answers there. And you are one of several chats on her screen, so she may not remember the details of yours.
So move fast. The whole reason for being on an app is to get off the app. That's what she's there for, that's what you're there for. You should message with the assumption that she likes you and the assumption that a date is forthcoming. If you're messaging with the idea of oh I got this match, now I have to impress her, that's not so good. Think instead that you both like each other and it's normal and natural for the two of you to go on a date.
Ask something open and easy, like the trip question above. If she responds well to it and qualifies to you, it would actually be a decent time to start moving it towards a number. If she is answering within minutes, make plans for tonight or tomorrow instead of chatting for another hour.
Move to a date in small steps
A lot of men text well for days and never get to a date. The number was for a plan, and as a man you have the right to move the conversation that direction. If your texts never take it towards plans, sooner or later you and the girl will just get bored of texting and going nowhere.
Don't jump to the plan from nowhere. Out of nowhere, a guy texts something like hey, let's grab a drink tomorrow at 7:00. That is a horrible text to send. Number one, it's very likely the girl's not ready for it, and she's certainly not expecting it. On top of which it's very specific, so you're more likely to get a no. If you close and get a no, it's going to be a lot harder to get a yes later on than if you had never gotten that no in the first place. It is a lot better to get yeses to small bits, to each part individually, rather than get one big no.
This is the soft close. Rather than just go from zero to do you want to go out, there should be kind of a gradual ramping up towards the date. A sequence I use is qualify, then confirm, then close.
"Are you an adventurous person?"
She says yes.
"What's your view on drinks and witty banter with a cute stranger?"
She says that sounds like a fun thing.
"Cool. What's your schedule like this week?"
Then you nail it down to a plan.
Notice the last step asks for her schedule, not for a time. If you say let's grab a drink tomorrow at 7:00 and she says I can't, does that mean she's not free at 7 or she doesn't want to do a drink at all?
If you are getting positives, you need to be at least bridging the close. You shouldn't be getting positive response after positive response and just keeping it conversational. And if the date is days away, leave part of it open. I like to leave some of the plans vague and undefined so that as I'm texting there's a reason to text, like the exact time or the exact place.
Keep the tone light while you do it. When I'm making plans with girls I like to have a mix of some of the plan details with a little bit of personality. If you have several texts in a row that are just plans, plans, plans, it looks very needy, very agenda, and it looks like all I'm focused on is the date.
When she replies with one word
Start with your own text. A one word answer is often the only answer you left room for. If the only response I could give to this is a blatant like yes or no or one-word response, it was a bad text to send. Questions with a yes or no answer, statements that just agree with her, and a long block that makes her tired all produce one word.
Next, match her weight. If she sends four words and you send four paragraphs, the gap looks needy.
Then change the kind of text, not the amount. Don't go random. Rather than resort to something super random, it's much better if it's something relevant to you and her. Or even flat out just calling out that she went missing tends to be more effective.
"You went quiet on me. I assume the hot sauce story was too much."
Last, read the signal for what it is. If short answers keep coming, she may not be that interested right now, and that is useful to know. After two or three flat replies in a row, ask for the plan with the soft close above. If she says yes to small steps, you have your answer. If she doesn't, spend your time on the women who write back.
Common questions
How do you text a girl for the first time after getting her number?
Start with your name and how she knows you, refer to one real moment from your meeting, and finish with a question that takes only a few words to answer. Send it the same day or the next, so she still remembers your face. If the number came from an app, say so in the first line.
How do you text a girl without being boring?
Give her something to react to. Boring texts are usually question after question about her day, or plain agreement. Swap one question for a small opinion, a light tease, or a joke about something she told you, and keep it short and informal.
How do you text a girl without sounding desperate?
Desperate comes from weight and speed: long texts, instant replies every time, three texts in a row, and checking whether she got the last one. Fix those and most of it goes away. Text when it is convenient for you, send one or two ideas, and treat the date as a normal next step.
How do you text a girl to ask her out?
Ask in small steps. Check that she is an adventurous person, check how she feels about a simple activity that works as a date, then ask what her week looks like. When she names a free day, suggest the plan for that day.
How do you keep a girl interested over text?
Keep the conversation moving toward something. Mix a little teasing with a little plan, and avoid sliding back to small talk once things are going well. A man who texts a couple of times a day with some personality, and then makes a plan, wears her out less than a man who texts every hour about nothing.
