To hide your Match.com profile, click your photo thumbnail and choose Hide your profile from everyone. You stop appearing in search results and to new members, but your account stays where it is. Women you had already been writing to can still read and reply, though they will see Profile Unavailable. You also cannot send Likes until you unhide.

The steps

Click your photo thumbnail, then choose Hide your profile from everyone.

That is the whole process. Hiding is not deleting, so your page is still there, waiting, whenever you decide to come back.

What changes while you are hidden

Two things happen at once.

First, you drop out of search results. A woman looking for someone like you will not come across you.

Second, new members stop seeing you. Anyone who has not already been in touch has no way to find you.

There is one limit on you as well. While your profile is hidden, you cannot send Likes. So hiding is a real pause, not a way to keep dating quietly. If you want to keep reaching out to women while staying out of sight, Match's Private Mode add-on is the tool for that instead.

What the women you were talking to see

Hiding does not cut off the conversations you already have. Anyone you had messaged before can still read what you wrote and reply to you.

What changes for them is your page. When they open it, they see Profile Unavailable instead of your photos and your profile.

That can look odd from her side if nobody explains it. If you are in a good conversation when you decide to hide, say so in a line. Tell her you are taking a break from the site for a while, and give her your number if she wants to keep talking. A woman who was enjoying the conversation will usually take you up on it. A woman who was not would have drifted off either way.

Hiding versus deleting

Deleting ends the account. Hiding just takes you out of view. Unless you are sure you are done with Match for good, hide rather than delete.

Men usually delete in a bad week. The dates dried up, a promising conversation went nowhere, and the site feels like the problem. A week later they want back in and have to build everything again. Hiding gives you the same break without that cost.

Hiding also keeps your chats open. Anyone you had messaged can still reply, so a promising exchange is not lost just because you needed a month off.

Good reasons to take a break

Some breaks are practical. A few dates with one woman have gone well, and you want to give her your full attention. Work is about to eat a month. You are traveling and will not be around to meet anyone.

Some breaks are about your head. If the site has started to feel like a chore, a short break usually helps more than grinding on. Men who keep going while they are fed up tend to write flat messages, and flat messages get flat replies.

Set yourself a rough return date when you hide. A break with an end is a rest. A break with no end tends to stretch into a year away, and coming back after a year feels much harder than coming back after a month.

Use the break to rewrite your bio

A hidden page is the perfect time for repairs, since nobody sees the half-finished version.

Start with the photos. Your lead photo should show your face clearly and look like you on a good day. Cut anything blurry, anything taken from far away, and anything where she has to guess which person is you.

Then rewrite your written sections. A strong long profile opens with a hook, says a little about the kind of woman you want, and gets specific. Saying what you are looking for also says a lot about you. Wanting a woman who travels suggests you travel too, and it does so without bragging.

End on something she can answer. Lines like "I love to laugh" give her nothing to reply to. A plain, specific detail about how you spend a Saturday gives her an easy first message.

Coming back

When you unhide, you show up in search and to new members again, this time with a better page than the one you left.

Treat the return like a fresh start. Pick an evening when you have time, look up the women you would most like to meet, and message the best few. A rebuilt profile and a handful of good first messages will do more for you than the old page ever did.

Match is built around search, so you do not have to wait for anyone to find you when you return. Over the first week or two back, compare how many women answer you with how many answered before the break. That comparison tells you whether the rewrite worked, and what to change next if it did not.
