There are four boxes near the bottom of the setup screen that most men scroll straight past. Job. Education. Height. What you are looking for.

They take about ten seconds each. They are also the four things a woman checks when she cannot decide about you, which means the men who skip them are skipping the tiebreaker.

Section 01

A blank is not a blank

This is worth understanding before any of the specifics.

When she opens your profile, the app shows her a row of small facts with icons beside them. If one is missing, she does not read nothing. She reads an answer you chose not to give, and she fills it in with the worst version available.

No job means unemployed, or something he is embarrassed about. No height means short and hiding it. No education means he did not go. Nothing under what he is looking for means he has not decided, or he has decided and would rather she found out later.

None of that has to be true about you. It does not matter. She is deciding in four seconds and there is nobody standing next to her to correct it.

Section 02

Job

Write what you actually do, in the words a friend would use, not the words on your contract.

"Operations Manager" tells her nothing. "I run the delivery side of a food company" tells her what your day looks like and hands her something to ask about. That is the whole trick. This field is worth far more as a conversation opener than as a status signal.

If your work is genuinely hard to explain, describe the setting instead. "Night shifts in a hospital lab" beats "Technician" even though it says less about the role, because she can picture it.

If you are between jobs, write the true thing. "Taking six months out, looking after my dad." Men treat that as a confession. It reads as a man who does not dodge questions.

Section 03

Education

Fill it in even if the answer is a school nobody has heard of, or nothing at all.

Most of the weight here is not prestige. It is presence. A filled field says a man who answered the question. An empty one, sitting next to three other empty ones, becomes part of the same impression.

If you did not go to university, the honest options still beat the blank. Put the trade, the apprenticeship, the certification. If the app only offers a list you do not fit into, pick the nearest true option and use the bio for the real answer.

Section 04

Height

This is the one men leave blank on purpose, and it is the one where blank costs the most.

On the apps that show it, most men fill it in. So an empty height field does not read as a man who thinks the question is silly. It reads as a man whose number is lower than he wishes it were, and her guess lands below the truth almost every time.

Put the real number in, for two reasons. She finds out in the first ten seconds of meeting you anyway, and a woman who would not have met a man your height is going to spend that drink reconsidering everything else you told her. And rounding up by two inches is exactly the size of lie that loses the evening, because it tells her what else you might be willing to adjust.

Section 05

What you are looking for

Answer it plainly, and answer it for right now rather than forever.

"Something serious" is fine. "Seeing what happens" is fine. "Not sure yet, but not hookups" is fine, and it is honest. The wrong answer is the empty one. The woman who wants what you want cannot find you, and the woman who wants the opposite messages you anyway and burns a week of both your time.

Men leave this blank to keep their options open. It does the reverse. A man with no stated intent gets read as the one thing every woman on the app is scanning for, and she swipes past rather than ask.

Section 06

The fields you can leave alone

Not everything needs an answer. Skip the noise. The star sign if you do not care about it. The boxes about pets you do not own. The long interest lists where you tick nine things and come out looking like every other profile on the app.

The rule is simple. Fill in anything a stranger uses to decide. Skip anything that is only decoration.

Section 07

Ten minutes, once

All four of these together take about ten minutes and then you never touch them again.

That is the unusual part. Most dating app advice asks you to change how you behave. This one asks you to type four facts into four boxes, and in return it removes the worst guesses a stranger is currently making about you.

Section 08

When the fields turn out to be the least of it

Filling these in is the cheapest improvement available on a dating app, which also makes it the smallest. If you fill all four and nothing moves, the fields were never what was holding you back. It was the photos, or the words around them, or the order the whole thing sits in.

That is a bigger job, and it is really three jobs. A full new photo set. Every word rewritten across Tinder, Hinge and Bumble. Then the order and the plan that tie them together. Having all of it rebuilt in one pass and handed back finished is what exists for the man who can already see what is wrong and is never going to give up a weekend to it. It is a build rather than something that keeps running, so once it is done the account is yours.
