Answer like a man with a life, not like a man glued to his phone. When she texts you, a reply within an hour or a few hours is normal, and half a day is the most you need. Do not answer in ten seconds every single time, and do not make her wait for days to look cool. For the first text after you get her number, send it within a day or two.
Why instant replies every time hurt you
My advice here is clear. If she takes six hours to answer and you always answer in ten seconds, you look like you are sitting by your phone waiting for her. That is not how a man with a full life behaves, and it quietly tells her that she is your top priority and she does not have to work for you.
Ten seconds is not literal. Two minutes or five minutes is the same thing if you do it every single time.
The fix is not a stopwatch. It is a normal human rhythm, where you look at your phone now and then and get back to people.
A normal range to aim for
When she writes to you, aim for somewhere between an hour and a few hours. A reply within half a day is the outer edge for most situations. That range looks natural, because people check their phones and answer when they have a moment.
It also works well for her. She is more likely to be glad to hear from you when you do not drop everything the second she sends a message.
Do not copy her delay to the minute. Some men say wait as long as she waits. That sounds clever and works badly. If she takes two days, you taking two days means the chat dies. If she waits a week, you do not need to wait a week. Reply at a normal pace and keep the conversation alive.
When instant is fine
The rule is not "never answer fast." There are plenty of times when a quick reply helps:
- You are in a fast back and forth, and she is texting quickly too. Keeping up is good.
- You are making plans for the same day. Quick answers make the logistics easy.
- You are about to call her. A few quick texts followed by a call can work well.
- You normally take a while, and this once you happen to have your phone in your hand.
A single fast reply is not a problem. A habit of instant replies is.
If you have been dating for a while, you can relax this even more. The rule matters most in the early stage, when attraction is still forming.
How long to wait before the first text after getting her number
This is a different question, and men often overthink it. You do not need to wait three days to look busy. A text within a day or two works well.
My first texting rule matters more than timing: make sure she knows who you are. Save your name and number in her phone if you can, or text your name right away. If you wait too long, she may forget you, especially if she was out that night and met a few people.
Then keep the first message short, clear and easy to answer. Mention something from your talk and suggest a plan if the vibe was good. A long, careful message sent after a week of nerves is much worse than a quick, friendly one sent the next day.
How long to wait to text her again
If you have texted her and she has not replied, give her time. A day is a fair minimum for casual texts, and a lot more for a woman you barely know. If you have a real reason, like a plan that depends on her answer, send a short, specific follow up once.
If you went on a date, send a quick message the same night or the next morning to say you had a good time. After that, let the conversation move at a natural pace. Do not text her every hour to keep the connection alive.
Texting when she can respond also helps. coach points out that sending a message when she is asleep or at work means your message may get lost among others. Pick a time when she is likely to see it and answer.
What matters more than the wait
Timing is a small part. What counts is what you send.
A short message that references something real, makes her smile and points to a plan will do better than a perfectly timed "hey, what are you up to?" Do not use timing to play games. Use it to avoid two extremes: looking desperate and looking indifferent.
If you are unsure, ask yourself one question: would a calm man who is busy but interested wait this long? If the answer is yes, send the text. If you are waiting only to prove that you are not eager, send it anyway.
What to do while you wait
Go live your day. Texts get easier to time when you are not staring at your phone. Put it in another room for an hour, finish a task, go for a walk. By the time you check it, you will answer in a natural way, and your reply will carry less nerves.
If you find you cannot stop checking, that is useful information about your own state. The cure is more things in your life that are not her.
